VP approves UCCE positions for recruitment

To continue our aggressive effort in hiring Cooperative Extension Advisors and Specialists, I am announcing the release of positions for future rounds of hiring. These positions have been through a thorough process of proposal and review. The more than 120 proposals for these CE positions were developed in consultation with our stakeholders. The review process involved public comment (more than 900 individual comments from agricultural organizations, governmental agencies, youth and nutrition coalitions, individuals and many others), ANR Program Teams, Cooperative Extension County Directors and College and School leadership.  All of the review information, along with information regarding current staffing and retirement projections, was considered by ANR Program Council in their deliberations to provide me with recommendations. My decisions in the release of these positions were based upon review of all the available information.

These positions are now in the queue and will be released for recruitment in phases over time to enable us to accomplish the search and hiring process in an orderly fashion, evaluate resources on a real-time basis, deal with unexpected changes in staffing, and address unanticipated issues as they arise. While I am providing the anticipated release dates, we will also be monitoring progress in recruitments already released to ensure that we are progressing efficiently.  Although we have hired more than four dozen new Cooperative Extension Advisors and Specialists over the past three years, we currently have 20 recruitments of previously released positions either underway or still to be initiated.

Travel funds available for CE specialists to collaborate with CE advisors

In ANR leaders’ discussions with Cooperative Extension specialists around the state, it became clear that there was a need for additional travel support to enable specialists to increase their collaborations with CE advisors. In response, ANR has created a pool of funds for CE specialists to apply for to support these collaborations. With the level of funds available, each specialist may apply for up to $2,000 for this fiscal year (funds must be expended by June 30, 2014).  Completing a short online survey is the only step in accessing these funds.

To keep the process simple, a brief survey form will be accessible from your ANR Portal. The survey will ask

ANR program support funds for advisors, academic coordinators, academic administrators & program reps

ANR leaders are continuing to direct USDA Smith-Lever funding to provide program support funds for advisors, academic coordinators, academic administrators and program representatives serving in county-based programs, statewide programs, research and extension centers and ANR support units.

These funds will be allocated to accounts for FY 2013-14 under the direction of respective unit directors.  An increased allocation has been approved based on a formula of $2,000 per advisor, academic coordinator and academic administrator and $1,000 per program representative.

Program support funds may be used in broad support of program activities such as the purchase of specialized equipment, computers, peripherals, etc.; travel and registration costs for professional meetings; training opportunities (professional training or locally organized events); and membership fees to professional societies.  Use of these funds will be approved by each unit director.

Funds will be transferred by the Business Operations Center to program support accounts assigned to respective units in October.  Each director is expected to manage, allocate and approve expenses in accordance with ANR’s guidelines. Funds must be spent and recorded on the UC account ledgers by June 30, 2014, in accordance with fiscal closing deadlines.

Questions may be directed to Cherie McDougald, ANR Business Operations director  at cfmcdougald@ucanr.edu.
