Recording available for using AI and data analytics for Cooperative Extension

If you are interested in using artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics in your extension and research work, Siavash Taravati, UC Cooperative Extension area integrated pest management advisor, recently hosted a webinar for people working in Cooperative Extension. He collaborated with entomologists Dawn Gouge of University of Arizona, Jody Green of University of Nebraska and Tamra Reall of University of Missouri Extension.

The webinar is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvkpFmjaby4.

“Many AI and data analytics talks are targeted at professional data scientists with overwhelmingly complex methodologies, while others are too simple and unhelpful in helping inexperienced users get started with using AI tools,” Taravati said. “In this webinar, you will learn about the basics of AI and DA, and together, we will quickly dive into the world of AI+DA by looking at some real-life research and extension problems and using actual apps and data modules to pre-process and analyze data, and interpret the results.”

Some of the topics covered in this workshop:

  • How to deal with relational databases created by local and federal governments. What is Structured Query Language (SQL)? What if my dataset has more than 1 million rows?
  • Extracting and manipulating text patterns in documents using regular expressions and other text detection and conversion tools.
  • Mass converting PDF files to plain text files while optimizing formatting.
  • Word frequency analysis: How to compare documents using old-fashioned word frequency analysis.
  • Natural language processing: Identifying sentences when punctuation is incomplete or wrong, identifying verbs, nouns, and adjectives in a sentence. Understand the meaning of words and sentences using AI.
  • Machine learning: Classifying abstracts and any piece of text unsupervised learning methods.
