UC ANR begins improving digital accessibility to meet April deadline

Work is underway across the organization to address ADA Title II compliance requirements by April 24, 2026.

Leadership has mandated that no new content can be published that is non-compliant after March 15. Content may be unpublished if it is not compliant. Compliance policy applies to all assets produced on behalf of the university by employees, volunteers, contractors, partners, etc.

The Digital Accessibility Task Force is meeting regularly and exploring/recommending Site Improve training modules

UC ANR has engaged Deque to provide accessibility training and support. They gave an Accessibility Awareness Training session during an extended Town Hall on Jan. 15. If you missed the session, please check your email for a message from Glenda Humiston on Jan. 21 with the subject line “Recording and Resources Accessibility Awareness UC ANR Town Hall” for a link to the recording.

Deque is providing Document Accessibility Training for three cohorts of 25 participants each (16 hours) and Content Creators Training for two cohorts of 25 participants each (8 hours). Document Accessibility Training covers creating accessible documents in Microsoft and Adobe applications, starting in the original source file. Content Creators Training focuses on the creation of digital content outside of documents, exploring plain language fundamentals, structuring content (including headings, hyperlinks and tables), handling various image types, alternative text, color usage, and visual alternatives. The expectation is that training participants will share the information with their networks.

Learning & Development has begun regularly emailing short, user-friendly accessibility tips.

Templates in the Communications Toolkit have been remediated for WCAG 2.1 compliance.

Siteimprove is available to all UC ANR employees to check the accessibility of websites. Submit a ticket to IT if you need access to Siteimprove.

IT is working to bring on a project manager and an accessibility expert to support the effort as well as tools for video interpreting and PDF remediation.
