Homeowners learn landscape design basics...

UC ANR South Coast Research and Extension Center, University of California Cooperative Extension, Orange County and Irvine Ranch Water District hosted a three-part landscape design basics workshop for homeowners seeking to make landscape improvements and take advantage of rebates from their local water purveyor.

The three-part Garden Design workshop series provides participants with the basic tool kit to create a water conserving landscape whether on their own or with the help of a contractor. Major focus of the workshop centered on how irrigation, plants and growth, and living space come together. 

As part of their homework assignment, participants created a sketch of their existing landscape and irrigation incorporating future changes along with a draft plant list. Participants were able to get feed back from one another  and workshop leaders  regarding the pros and cons of their projects through group discussion. UCCE OC Master Gardener volunteers were on hand to aid attendees with any questions they had.A few of the common issues between the groups included:

How to troubleshoot pest problems – IPM?

How to properly fertilize, feed your plants?

How to create a cohesive design?

Shrub and tree maintenance - pruning.

What edible plants are best to incorporate into your landscape?

Permeable materials?

Recommendations for artificial turf, or turf replacement options that require no care.

 A great learning experience for all.
