Registration is now open for the Sustainable Food Systems Strategic Initiative Conference, which will be held Oct. 11-13, 2011, at Freeborn Hall at UC Davis.
The theme of the conference is “Strengthening Our Connections: People, Issues and Policy.”

We are pleased to announce that Beth Grafton-Cardwell has agreed to lead the Endemic and Invasive Pests and Diseases initiative.
Grafton-Cardwell is director of the Lindcove Research and Extension Center and a Cooperative Extension entomology specialist with a UC Riverside appointment based at Kearney Agricultural Research & Extension Center. In her specialist role, Grafton-Cardwell develops IPM strategies to manage arthropod pests of citrus in the San Joaquin Valley. Recently she has led efforts to educate the public about Asian citrus psyllid and the disease it spreads, Huanglongbing or citrus greening.
Grafton-Cardwell will serve on Program Council as the EIPD initiative leader.

Broad input is being sought for the Sustainable Food Systems Strategic Initiative (SFS SI) conference. A survey has been developed by the strategic initiative panel to facilitate conference planning. The SFS SI conference will be held at the UC Davis campus on October 11-12. While the conference will formally conclude at lunch on Oct. 12, accommodations are being provided for program teams/workgroups to meet during the afternoon/evening of Oct. 12 through lunch on Oct. 13. After a nationwide search, we are pleased to announce that Doug Parker has been selected to serve as the inaugural director of the California Water Resources Research Institute (CWRRI), effective Oct. 1. He will also serve as leader for the Water Quality, Quantity and Security strategic initiative.
Parker is currently director of the Mid-Atlantic Water Program, an associate professor of agricultural & resource economics and Cooperative Extension specialist at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on environmental economics, economics of non-point source water pollution control, and economics of regulation and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay.

If you plan to attend UC ANR’s Healthy Families and Communities Strategic Initiative Conference and haven't registered, please do so by tomorrow, Wednesday, May 11. The organizers need a headcount for meals and logistics.
The theme of the conference is “Broadening and Deepening our Policy Relevance,” and it will be held May 17-19 at the ARC at UC Davis. Diana Dooley, Secretary of California Department of Health and Human Services, will be the keynote speaker.
