I am pleased to announce that John Harper has agreed to lead the Sustainable Natural Ecosystems Strategic Initiative for a two–year appointment. As the SNE initiative leader, John will serve on Program Council.
John has been a UC Cooperative Extension advisor specializing in livestock and natural resources for 23 years in Mendocino and Lake counties. His research covers sheep and goat production, range cattle production, rangeland, watershed, water quality and computer applications. As an advisor, he has worked with fellow UCCE advisors, specialists and Agricultural Experiment Station scientists on several research and education projects. Nutrition is one of the more complex problems, ranging from overnutrition to undernutrition, both linked to social-economic, science-health literacy, ethnic-cultural influences and individual and environmental barriers. The nutrition landscape can be improved through research, education and policy.

We are pleased to announce the request for proposals for ANR’s 2012 competitive grants program. The RFP is posted at http://ucanr.edu/files/134928.pdf.
The program is similar to last year’s with these changes:
- The water initiative is included in this year’s call.
- Letters of intent are due 30 days from today.
- Applicants whose letters have been selected will have 6 weeks to submit a full proposal.
- Both long-term and short-term projects must include extension and research.
- Cross-initiative collaboration is strongly encouraged.

Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that 21 projects will be funded by ANR’s competitive grants program, for a total of $4.46 million over five years.
The purpose of this grants program, as outlined in the request for proposals (RFP), is to support projects under initiatives that focus on high priority issues that encourage collaboration, continue to strengthen the research-extension continuum, yield policy relevant outcomes, and achieve significant statewide impacts in California. The four initiatives are: Endemic and Invasive Pests and Diseases, Healthy Families and Communities, Sustainable Food Systems, and Sustainable Natural Ecosystems.
