After a nationwide search, we are pleased to announce that Doug Parker has been selected to serve as the inaugural director of the California Water Resources Research Institute (CWRRI), effective Oct. 1. He will also serve as leader for the Water Quality, Quantity and Security strategic initiative.
Parker is currently director of the Mid-Atlantic Water Program, an associate professor of agricultural & resource economics and Cooperative Extension specialist at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on environmental economics, economics of non-point source water pollution control, and economics of regulation and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay.

National call for water research proposals
The U.S. Geological Survey and the National Institutes for Water Resources are requesting proposals for matching grants to support research on the topic of improving and enhancing the nation’s water supply.
The topic includes, and is not limited to, enhancement of water supply infrastructure, development and evaluation of warning systems for extreme hydrological events, integrated management of ground and surface waters, and the resilience of public water supplies. Proposals are sought in not only the physical dimensions of supply, but also the role of economics and institutions in water supply and in coping with extreme hydrologic conditions.

To address the very important strategic initiative of water, ANR has created the California Water Resources Research Institute (CWRRI). Aligned with other state water institutes supported in part by the federal Water Resources Research Act, the CWRRI will be the California part of the National Institute for Water Research (NIWR) and will support research and extension activities that contribute to the quality, quantity, reliability and efficient management of California’s water resources.
ANR has begun recruitment for an inaugural director who can provide leadership and operational management for the CWRRI and serve as ANR’s strategic initiative leader for Water Quality, Quantity and Security.
