We are pleased to announce the request for proposals for ANR’s 2012 competitive grants program. The RFP is posted at http://ucanr.edu/files/134928.pdf.
The program is similar to last year’s with these changes:
- The water initiative is included in this year’s call.
- Letters of intent are due 30 days from today.
- Applicants whose letters have been selected will have 6 weeks to submit a full proposal.
- Both long-term and short-term projects must include extension and research.
- Cross-initiative collaboration is strongly encouraged.

Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the second group of academic positions approved for recruitment and hiring. Eleven positions, including five specialists and six advisors, are being released for recruitment. As discussed in previous communications, these positions will be funded by salary reversions resulting from retirements and separations that have occurred over the last year.

Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that 21 projects will be funded by ANR’s competitive grants program, for a total of $4.46 million over five years.
The purpose of this grants program, as outlined in the request for proposals (RFP), is to support projects under initiatives that focus on high priority issues that encourage collaboration, continue to strengthen the research-extension continuum, yield policy relevant outcomes, and achieve significant statewide impacts in California. As I assume the responsibilities of vice president, my strongest goal is to ensure that the entire UC Agriculture and Natural Resources community thrives. With the Strategic Vision as our guide for resource allocation and decision-making, I will work to provide continuity in our programs and operations.

Dear Colleagues,
I am honored to be asked by Dan Dooley and Mark Yudof to lead ANR, which has been my academic home for the past 25 years.
Over the last three years, the Division has endured dramatic changes:
- $5.2 million permanent budget cut
- $4 million in unfunded mandates
- $4 million cut in temporary funds
- Another $3.2 million cut FY 2011-12 to our permanent budget, plus unfunded liabilities including funding for merits, our portion of the retirement system re-start, and funding represented staff agreements.
