By the time you read this ANR Update, USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will have released their requests for applications for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI). You've already heard that we are preparing to provide significant support for those seeking AFRI grants for integrated research and extension projects that align with our strategic initiatives. This new competitive grants program, with its emphasis on integrated research, education and extension programs, is a new way of doing business for NIFA grant programs.

PC to include county-based members
With input from the current regional directors and other ANR academics, the Executive Working Group and Program Council have agreed on the importance of adding county-based academics with a statewide perspective to Program Council.
Barbara Allen-Diaz, AVP-Strategic Initiatives and Academic Programs, has announced that when the two remaining regional directors leave Program Council on July 1, county-based academics will be appointed. New Academic Personnel unit formed
The new Academic Personnel unit has been formed at Davis and is based in the ANR building. Kim Rodrigues, executive director, is leading the unit, which currently includes Carolyn Frazier, director; Andra Strads, analyst; David White, analyst; and Pam Tise, executive assistant.
The tasks they are working on currently include:
- Editing and updating e-books for discussion with Academic Assembly Council’s Personnel Committee.
- Reviewing and implementing APM 315 – Appointment and Promotion section dealing with clarifying expectations, career equity reviews, etc.

County directors to discuss fundraising
Don Klingborg will be holding conference calls with the county directors to discuss fundraising in the counties. During the calls on March 19 and 24, Klingborg will ask the CDs for their opinions about whether we should pursue fundraising at the local level and, if so, what are the potential roles and approaches that should be standardized?

Who do county directors report to?
Until July 1, county directors in the Central Valley Region and Central Coast and South Region will report to their respective regional directors. County directors who were part of the North Coast and Mountain Region now report to Linda Manton, regional director. Beginning July 1, when the regions are dissolved, all county directors will report administratively directly to Barbara Allen-Diaz, AVP – Academic Programs and Strategic Initiatives. However, to consult for policy decisions, the county directors will contact directly the appropriate source according to the nature of the issue.
