Hi Larry, thanks for your interest. A water efficient edible landscape is a tricky area. There are a couple basics one can begin with, such as understanding your plants' water needs, grouping plants with similar needs together when possible and installing drip irrigation.

An important first step is to define for yourself what water efficiency means to you. It helps to begin with a goal in mind. It's also important to understand that if a fruiting plant needs a certain amount of water but less is provided, chances are it will not provide the typical bountiful harvest. In that regard, it is also important to identify what your goals are for your edible garden - how much you're hoping to harvest.

A UC publication on edible landscapes will soon be available for purchase. We'll announce it's release when it's available. In the meantime, you might peruse the vegetable page of the UC ANR California Garden website for information - http://cagardenweb.ucanr.edu/Vegetables/
