I have been growing Earlygirl tomatoes like this for years. They usually get so tall that I have to prune the main stem in August, or let them bend back toward the ground. I've never had problems with sunscald. To avoid the overly-tall problem, I've started using a sort of espalier method, where I train some suckers laterally once the walls-of-water come off, and then trellis them up through lengths of jute that I string between a few stakes. Once I select a few stems to be the main ones, then I pinch the shoots from there. I'm done with climbing on ladders to pound stakes!

It does not seem to be a very well known technique here, but I like this method.
