I enjoyed your story of discovery, as it rang true with my own experience. i found a huge one in the midst of the lava field between 395 and the old highway--SE of Aberdeen, about due W of Division Creek Rest Area. I had never seen one before--and not many since, until we moved to Chalfant. They appear like magic out of the volcanic tablelands, seemingly from nowhere, bloom luxuriantly, then disappear again, with no trace left after the leaves die back.

I have grown a few from seed (https://plantsofthesouthwest.com), but so far my plants are not as incredible as the ones I see in the wild. I've never seen plants for sale anywhere, and I don't think they would take kindly to transplanting.
