And annual wild oats. We lost this battle long ago, but I think about it every time I watch television coverage of a wildfire and they show dry wild oats as potential tinder. The perennial native bunch grasses were much less combustive in the dry season, as they remained partially green. I see them as I hike into less disturbed areas, but wild oats have outcompeted them in much of California's grassland,
