Yeah, what is it with the nightshades? Same story here in Chalfant--the most prized plants by my mammal varmints are peppers, tomatoes and eggplants, all of which should supposedly contain toxins, yet they are routinely chomped off to the stem. Don't know who it is that eats them. I've always suspected rats (kangaroo or otherwise), since I seem to notice it in the morning, but it could be sneaky ground squirrels in the daylight. I normally put chicken wire cylinders around them. Sometimes I don't, and everything seems to be fine--until suddenly they're gone!
