As noted in this article, real progress has been made in regards to the obesity epidemic. Great strides have been made in increasing access to healthy food options, as well as encouraging exercise. However, the one component left unmentioned in many interventions, is providing the rationale for children and adults to make healthier choices. Many current interventions are external, and children are still lacking the self awareness and esteem to make healthful informed choices for themselves. Enhancing prevention efforts efforts that focus on the individual is critical. In order to have a sustainable impact on the obesity epidemic and to ensure that individuals can maintain healthy behaviors, primary preventive education is essential.
