I had a few wan specimens last year, but they self seeded and the volunteer plants have been beautiful - covered in flowers and bees. Those that I started early inside seemed to resent being transplanted and have not anywhere near as well.

I seeded a blue only variety (don't recall the name, it's been too long...) over 10 years ago in my garden / orchard and they have self-seeded and persisted there ever since, despite the fact that my climate in late spring/early summer is roughly the same as where you are (I know because I used to have property north of Bishop). The key, I believe, is, that the self-seeded flowers find their own perfect TIME AND PLACE to sprout and bloom, such as in rock crevices or along the dripline of irrigated fruit trees or along the border of irrigated beds, next to dripping faucets, etc., ... I help that along by dropping spent, chopped up plants, incl. their seeds in places where I think they might thrive.
They are just now really done and ready to be cut down, after months of gorgeous blooms. They're one of my favorite, no maintenance flowers besides borage, calendula (both done now, too)and gaillardia for color and pollinator support besides the natives like buckwheat and other wildflowers.
