The Citrus Pest and Disease Prevention Program is hosting three free training workshops for field crew supervisors and farm labor contractors in San Diego, Ventura and Tulare counties this month.

As nights slowly get longer (by 2 minutes every 24 hours) and night time temperatures slowly begin to drop from the 70s into the high 60s, the plants that survived July's scorching temperatures slowly begin to come out of the state of semi-dormancy that is caused by high temperatures.

This year I decided to try my hand at growing seeds. I have never actually done this, even though I have done so many other projects in the garden over the years. I picked up packets of cosmos and bachelor's buttons from my local nursery.

The Bohart Museum of Entomology at the University of California, Davis, has announced the themes of its fall open houses: Sunday, Aug. 27: Praying Mantises Saturday, Sept. 23: Household Vampires Saturday, Nov. 4: Monarchs The open houses, free and family friendly, take place from 1 to 4 p.m.
