I recently visited a field that had quite a bit of rice seed midge injury. In this case, the seedlings that were not injured were almost at the one leaf stage, and one could observe quite a few seeds still in the soil surface.

Visitors at the recent Bohart Museum of Entomology open house on ants learned all about what myrmecologist Phil Ward, UC Davis professor of entomology, calls "our friends, the ants." The three-hour open house included displays of live ants as well as specimens.

Every Memorial Day, I especially remember my great-grandfather, Samuel Davidson Laughlin (1843-1910), a Civil War color bearer who contracted malaria during the Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 -July 4, 1863). The soldiers called the mosquitoes "gallinippers.
