What some consider a nuisance at picnics or unbearable in places like the South or even Alaska can really be deadly if they carry certain diseases like West Nile, malaria, or dengue.

I recently learned that my favorite flowers are linked to my Greek heritage and Greek mythology [1]. Unbeknown to me, my favorite flowers and the ones I grow in my garden are daffodils, lilies, gladiolus, and roses. Other favorites associated with Greek mythology are anemones and peonies.

Last week, the UC Dry Bean Field Day was held on the UC Davis campus. The field day included presentations on dry bean breeding efforts for yield, pest management, and nutritional properties.

UC Riverside scientists are on the hunt for a chemical that disrupts evil weevils' mating and could prevent them from destroying California's supply of avocados. Avocado weevils, small beetles with long snouts, drill through fruit to lay eggs.

Last summer, while visiting Maine, I was drawn to the ubiquitous Queen Anne's Lace (Daucas carota) wildflowers. Native to temperate areas of Europe and southwest Asia, Queen Anne's Lace now grows wild in California, and in most of the United States. It is prolific in Maine.

Wildfires are an increasing threat to people's lives, property and livelihoods, especially in rural California communities.

Congratulations to Melody Keena, UC Davis alumna and entomologist extraordinaire. Keena, a research entomologist with the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station in Hamden, Conn.
