Cynthia Kerson I have Centranthus ruber (Red Valerian) in my front yard, a perennial in the Valerianaceae family. This drought-tolerant, sun-loving plant flowers most of the summer if you trim it at the stem axis of spent flowers. It makes great cut flowers.

Last Chance to Name That Spider--And Bohart Museum to Host 'Spider' Open House

Monday, June 1 at 5 p.m. is the deadline to suggest a species name for a new genus of trapdoor spiders that UC Davis professor Jason Bond discovered on a sandy beach at Moss Landing State Park, Monterey County. Bond proposes to name the genus, Cryptocteniza, part of which means hidden or secret.
