About the Event
Who is invited: Viticulturists, vineyard managers, winemakers, license holders, grower relations, field scouts, field workers, interns, and anyone in the wine grape industry
interested in learning how to ID ant species commonly found in the vineyard.
Ants protect mealybugs from predators and parasitoids in exchange for
harvesting the honeydew that they excrete. Using baits can provide effective ant
control but knowing what species of ant you are dealing with is important in
choosing a bait that the ants are attracted to and therefore effective.
This is a hands-on ant identification workshop covering how to use a microscope, how to
use the vineyard ant keys, what the ant features in the key look like, and practice
identifying ants using ant specimens and the vineyard ant key.
