Cauliflower is a cool season vegetable, best planted in the fall or early spring. The part that we harvest is actually a dense cluster of flower buds.

Cultural tips for growing cauliflower, UC IPM
Planting
- Transplant seedlings 24 to 30 inches apart in February to April or September, possibly August or October.
- If plants are crowded, they may be prone to pests and may not form good heads.
- If growing your own seedlings, start the seeds 6 weeks before you want to plant.
Harvesting
- Harvest when the heads are of good size and still compact. If the head is starting to loosen, harvest it immediately.
- As the heads enlarge, they may become exposed to the sun and discolor. Avoid this by folding the leaves over the head or by tying the leaves together to protect the head from the sun. Not necessary for colored varieties, only for traditional white ones.
- Unlike broccoli, cauliflowers do not send out side shoots. Once the head has been harvested, pull the plant for compost or green waste.
