On March 7, 2026, 4-H members from across the state gathered on the University of California, Davis campus for the 2026 State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. San Diego County was proudly represented by four junior 4-H members and two senior 4-H members.
Competing in the Junior Division were Colton, Grace, Grant, and Wyatt. Representing the county in the Senior Division were Colby and Olivia. San Diego County members had a strong showing, with Colton earning an impressive 2nd place finish and Grant placing 4th overall in the junior division.
The State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest provides participants with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in livestock evaluation and selection while strengthening their communication, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. During the contest, participants evaluated 10 classes of livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and swine. At least one class includes breeding animals evaluated using EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) data.
Contestants are given 12 minutes to evaluate and rank each class. In addition to placing the classes, participants present four sets of oral reasons, one for each species, explaining and defending their decisions. After all reasons are delivered, officials provide a critique of the classes, followed by the presentation of awards.
