Agritourism Regulations

Introduction

Agritourism, defined as the practice of touring agricultural areas to see farms and participate in farm activities, is a growing force in California’s tourist economy.  With a range of possibilities, from property tours to festivals, farmers and ranchers are finding ways to diversify their income streams and connect with travelers from around the world. In order to take advantage of these opportunities, farmers will have to navigate state and local permitting and licensing requirements.

For more information about starting an agritourism venture, business planning, and more visit UC ANR’s California Agritourism website.

Accessibility & Insurance

California State law requires that all public access spaces must be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). According to this piece of federal legislation, all spaces that are open to the public must make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. Check out the resources below to see how other agritourism businesses are navigating ADA requirements.

It is also important to review your insurance policy before allowing the public onto your farm. Farm liability insurance policies generally only cover agricultural activities (ex: growing, harvesting, natural disaster). If you want to introduce tourism activities (ex: u-pick, vacation rentals, events), you will likely need to update your insurance policy. Contact your insurance agent to make sure your insurance agent and ask about Commercial General liability coverage.
