Every neighborhood has quiet showstoppers—plants you pass by until one day they do something spectacular. Recently, a beautiful plant in my neighbor’s front yard sent up an enormous flowering stalk, turning an ordinary walk into a botanical surprise.
Of course, I had to know more. I took a photo, did a bit of sleuthing, and discovered that this dramatic plant is Agave franzosini, also known as Majestic Agave or century plant, native to Mexico. It loves full sun and well-drained soil, which may be why it seems so comfortable in sunny, dry landscapes like coastal gardens and rock gardens. Around here, it adds a bit of drama, a bit of mystery. I had never seen one in bloom before, which makes sense: these agaves flower only once every 10 to 30 years. This one is about ten years old, so catching it in bloom feels like being let in on a rare neighborhood secret.
