On Saturday morning at the Dunnell Nature Park and Education Center in Fairfield, there was a beautifully planned and presented workshop by MG Ruth Clawson. Ruth spoke to a packed audience on how to make gifts from your summer garden. She demonstrated how to make small flower posies, as well as a large arrangement with flowers and greenery from her own garden.

There were several stations for the public to make and take gifts of their own to keep or share with their friends. The selections included potpourri sachets, bath salt packets, adorable herb-infused salt jars, and fragrant herb bouquets featuring lemon verbena, lavender, mint, sage, lemon balm, and rosemary. My friends thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and two are interested in applying to join the MG program this fall.
In my garden, Cotyledon orbiculata, aka pig's ear, is blooming. It was thriving in a huge patch at a Cambria Airbnb we stayed in 4 years ago. I couldn't resist taking a 6-inch cutting. The flowers are so pretty and bell-shaped. But looks like the plant has a mealybug problem and needs to be sprayed with an alcohol-and-water mixture (we use 1/3 water to 2/3 70% alcohol).
