Common Diseases of Fruit and Landscape Trees and How to Manage Them

Spots, wilting, dieback, discoloration, and unusual growth do not always mean that a plant has an infectious disease. Join Dr. Akif Eskalen, Professor of Cooperative Extension in Plant Pathology for a talk that introduces Master Gardeners to a practical, science-based approach for recognizing symptoms and signs, distinguishing diseases from environmental or cultural problems, and understanding what can and cannot be diagnosed by sight. Participants will learn how to examine plants, collect useful samples, use simple magnification tools, and determine appropriate next steps. The presentation will emphasize prevention, sanitation, irrigation management, monitoring, and integrated pest management while helping Master Gardeners avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary pesticide use.
