Oceano Victory Garden

About the Victory Garden program

Victory Gardens began as a way to increase local food production during difficult times, especially during wartime. By encouraging people to grow food at home and in shared spaces, Victory Gardens helped build skills, confidence, and community connections.

UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County carry that same spirit of community and self-sufficiency at the Oceano Victory Garden, where we help residents learn practical ways to grow food.

The Victory Garden program teaches beginning gardeners how to start a vegetable garden in a container, backyard, or community garden plot. The program is offered as a four-part series in spring and fall and is led by trained UC Master Gardener volunteers. Participants who complete all four classes receive a Victory Gardener certificate. Depending on the location, participants may also be invited to continue gardening together informally and attend additional group workshops.

The garden

The Oceano Victory Garden is located at 1687 Front Street in Oceano, across from the Oceano Train Depot. Workshops may be held at both locations.

Workshops

Victory Garden workshops support three goals:

  • Increase local food production during times of challenge
  • Teach practical gardening skills and build understanding of food systems
  • Strengthen community through shared gardening experiences

Victory Garden workshops are expected to begin again this fall.
