About the Event

Get ready to spice up your garden!

We’re diving into the world of alliums, covering everything from softneck and hardneck garlic varieties to gourmet shallots. We will walk you through a foolproof holiday-based timeline: planting by Thanksgiving, fertilizing in March, and harvesting in June. You’ll also learn essential post-harvest curing secrets for a high-quality yield and watering tips to keep bulb rot away. We will wrap things up with a hands-on demonstration on how to get those bulbs in the ground!

Please join MG's Kathy Kaplan and Aparna Bugwadia for a presentation on homegrown garlic and shallots—the ultimate flavor boosters for your home garden harvest. The presentation is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10 am at Martial Cottle Park in the Master Gardener’s Parcel.

Please note:

  • Participants should wear closed-toed shoes, layered clothing, and a hat, as the class is held outdoors.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to park and sign in.
  • The park charges $6.00 for parking; or park closer to our area on Chynoweth Avenue near Vauxhall Circle for free (parcel location in Google Maps).

Operated in partnership with the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department.
