Assistant Vice Provosts named
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Darren Haver and Lynn Schmitt-McQuitty have accepted Assistant Vice Provost appointments. The Assistant Vice Provosts are 25 percent positions to oversee special projects and serve as the coordinators for the Research and Extension Council (expanded from the former CD Council).
Darren Haver has been appointed to a two-year term as Assistant Vice Provost – RECs, effective Jan. 1, 2018. Darren has served as the interim associate director of the Research and Extension Center system since Oct. 1, 2017. In addition to his Assistant Vice Provost appointment, Darren is a UC Cooperative Extension water resources advisor in Orange County, director of South Coast Research and Extension Center in Irvine since 2009, and director of UC Cooperative Extension in Orange County since 2011. Haver joined UC ANR in 2002.
Lynn Schmitt-McQuitty has been appointed to a two-year term as Assistant Vice Provost – County Directors, effective January 1, 2018. Lynn joined UC Cooperative Extension in 1996 as a 4-H Program Representative in Butte and Placer counties and at the State 4-H Office. In 2001, Schmitt-McQuitty became the Youth Development Advisor in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, and added San Benito County to her appointment in 2012 as the Youth Development Advisor and County Director.
Lynn and Darren bring a wealth of experience to these inaugural appointments and will help shape the work of the Assistant Vice Provost appointments as support for and under the direction of the Vice Provost – Research and Extension (search underway). The Vice Provost – Research and Extension serves as the first point of contact for REC Directors and County Directors. While we continue our efforts to fill the Vice Provost position, the UC ANR Associate Vice President will be that first point of contact.

Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension position being re-evaluated
UC ANR has been searching for a Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension for some time now without success. Following an extended application submission and review process, the search committee has not identified any applicants to be interviewed.
My sincere thanks to the search committee for their time and hard work to identify and review candidates for the position. Thanks also go to Vice Provost Greer, who has agreed to continue in the role through the end of September.
Over the course of the next few weeks, we will evaluate the necessary functions of the entire leadership team and, with advice from key leaders throughout the UC ANR system, develop a plan to move forward to provide for these key functions. We are currently finalizing plans to meet needs effective October 1. We will share those plans shortly.

Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension search extended to July 14
The Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension search has been extended to July 14, 2017, to solicit more candidates for consideration. The search committee reviewed applications and recommended we continue to seek a person with the appropriate combination of skills and experience for this critical UC ANR position.
The Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension is a key position that provides oversight and coordination for the academic review process. In addition, the person in this position provides leadership and vision for our network of county leaders and how we partner with counties, seeking to strengthen these partnerships going forward while providing support to UC ANR county leaders.
Current VP-Cooperative Extension Chris Greer agreed to fulfill the duties until June 30 before assuming the role of area Integrated Pest Management Cooperative Extension advisor for San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
Everyone in UC ANR will benefit from finding another extraordinary leader who possesses the unique set of skills UC ANR needs to build on our current successes and direct our programs toward California's future needs.
The ideal candidate will be a leader who
- understands the complexity of our county partnerships and the county-by-county needs across California;
- can create, gain buy-in to and deploy a vision to support Cooperative Extension county leadership and facilitate their success;
- appreciates the breadth of program areas within UC Cooperative Extension;
- has extensive personnel experience with academic hiring and merit and promotion processes; and
- can quickly get up to speed, building on his or her past demonstrated expertise in Extension and academia.

Bell named Vice Provost–Statewide Programs/Strategic Initiatives
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Mark Bell has accepted the Vice Provost–Statewide Programs/Strategic Initiatives position. Mark, who has served as director of the UC Davis International Learning Center since 2007, will join UC ANR on May 1 in the offices at 2801 Second Street in Davis.
UC ANR can benefit from his skills and experience in leveraging research-extension linkages, adult education and information technology for agricultural development.Prior to joining UC Davis, Mark, who speaks Spanish, worked for nine years at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico and 11 years at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines.
At IRRI, he led development of the Rice Knowledge Bank – the world's major repository for rice-oriented training and extension materials aimed to help developing countries. He is currently leading development of Ag Extension, eAfghan Ag and e-China Appleat UC Davis International Learning Center.
As vice provost, he will serve on the UC ANR Program Council and collaborate closely with the Vice Provost of Cooperative Extension and the Director of the Research and Extension Center System.
Mark has a Ph.D. in soil science and bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences from the University of Queensland in Australia and a master's degree in soil science from the University of Reading, U.K.
We must thank the search committee members for their unflagging efforts to find an extraordinary leader who possesses the unique set of skills needed to help us build on UC ANR's current successes and direct our programs toward the needs of California's future.
I know many of you have already met Mark Bell and collaborated on projects with him. Understanding the breadth of work that we do, the wide array of agencies and organizations that we partner with and the diverse clientele that we serve will help Mark quickly get up to speed.

Following an interview process and review of the feedback collected from the search committee and seminar attendees as well as the application materials, I am requesting that the Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension search be extended so that we may solicit more candidates for consideration. Although we saw several strong applicants, we want to be certain that we have done our due diligence in finding the very best person for this critical job.
The Vice Provost – Cooperative Extension is a key position that provides oversight and coordination for the academic review process.
