Become a 4-H Volunteer
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with 4-H!
Adult volunteers are the heart of our program. They lead projects, mentor youth, and help create a safe and positive learning environment.
This page explains who can volunteer, what is required, and how to get started.
Who Can Volunteer?
Adults who are 18 years or older may apply to become 4-H volunteers.
Volunteers may serve in roles such as:
Club leader
Project leader
Activity or event volunteer
Committee member
County-level leader
No previous 4-H experience is required — just a willingness to support youth and follow program guidelines.
Our Commitment to Youth Safety
All 4-H volunteers must complete a screening process before working with youth.
This helps ensure:
Youth safety
Program integrity
Compliance with University of California policies
You may not begin volunteering until your enrollment and screening process are fully approved.
Steps to Become a Volunteer
1. Choose Your Role
Decide how you would like to serve:
Lead a specific project
Help with a club
Support a special event
Join a county committee
If you are unsure, contact the County 4-H Office to discuss options.
2. Complete Online Enrollment
All new volunteers must enroll through the ZSuite online system.
You will:
Create a profile
Select your volunteer role
Complete required forms
Agree to the volunteer code of conduct
Use an email address you check regularly.
3. Complete Screening Requirements
New volunteers must complete:
Background check
Required online training
Live Scan fingerprinting
- Complete DOJ/FBI Live Scan clearance. Form will be emailed to you after the above steps have been completed.
- You can find a Fingerprinting location on your own and complete this form and submit it with your receipt for reimbursement (up to $35) to the County 4-H Treasurer.
- If you are in East County, you can schedule an appointment with Diablo Live Scan (Antioch and Brentwood locations) and let them know Brenda with the 4-H Office sent you and they will bill the county directly.
4. Attend Orientation or Training
New volunteers:
- All new 4-H volunteers are required to take the New Volunteer Training online courses in the New Volunteer Training online courses in the Campus Extension system system before they become approved as volunteers. This interactive training series introduces you to the best practices in positive youth development that are used in 4-H.
- Once logged in to course, use use enrollment key to access the courses.
- If above link does not take you directly to the new volunteer course: Once logged in, click on 4-H & Youth, then 4-H: California, scroll down and click on “2025-2026 California New Volunteer Course-English” and use use enrollment key to access the courses. The course will take approximately 1.5 - 2 hours and do not need to be completed in one sitting. They will pick up where you left off when you return.
- Course Lessons:
- 4-H Orientation Course (40 minutes)
- 2-Deep Supervision Policy (5 minutes)
- CANRA for Volunteers (30 minutes)
- 4-H Thriving Model of PYD (15 minutes)
- 4-H Vision and Impact (5 minutes)
- Certificate of Completion (1 minute)
Training ensures you feel prepared and supported in your role.
Volunteer Expectations
As a 4-H volunteer, you agree to:
Provide a safe and inclusive environment
Follow 4-H policies and procedures
Communicate clearly with youth and families
Model positive leadership and behavior
Volunteers are expected to commit to regular participation and follow through on responsibilities.
Enrollment Fees
Submit your program enrollment fees.
- Program fees must be paid online using a credit card.
- Contra Costa County 4-H 2025-2026 Adult Volunteer Enrollment Fees are $30.
If cost is a concern, contact the County 4-H Office for guidance.
When You Are Approved
After completing all requirements:
The County 4-H Office reviews your application
You receive confirmation of approval
You may begin working with youth
You may not supervise youth until your status is marked active.
