Platique un poco esta mañana acerca de un problema de fruta albina. Quizás no debe ser una sorpresa que estuvimos hablando de esto justamente esta mañana, porque la verdad es que el tiempo ha sido bastante nublado y fresco por casi un semana.
Como el lector puede ver de la foto abajo de alguna fruta albina de la variedad Diamante (ya son uno años desde tomar la foto), la fruta albina es pálida con una manchita de rojo al redor de cada aquenio. La falta de color rojo maduro proviene de un abasto inadecuado de azúcar durante la maduración de tal manera que la fruta también resulta insípida y sin sabor.
En nuestra costa central, albinismo de la fruta de fresa tiende a surgir en campos debajo de regímenes agresivas de abonamiento de nitrógeno y riego bastante frecuente durante un periodo nublado siguiendo tiempo soleado y moderadamente caluroso. Los síntomas tal vez se exacerbarán en partes cubiertas de sombra.
Entonces, para mitigar un problema de fruta albina, especialmente durante un episodio de tiempo nublado siguiendo periodos soleados y moderadamente calurosos, uno quisiera ser un poco más conservador con el nitrógeno y el agua de riego. De toda manera, un cambio en el tiempo tal como estamos experimentando hoy mismo con días brillando de Sol después casi una semana de niebla, hará muchísimo en reducir fruta albina.

Introducción: Lo que sigue es una descripción de una evaluación completa de una situación de plantas de fresa amarillas en el distrito de producción de Castroville. Este problema de plantas de fresa amarillas surgiendo en ciertas partes de producción acerca de Castroville y Salinas nos ha confundido por años, pero tengo yo la opinión que la obra descrita en este reporte nos ha permitido crear un argumento fuerte sobre la causa de este mal por lo menos en este caso.
Métodos y Materiales: En todo sacamos cuatro muestras – dos de una parte del campo de amarillo grave, y dos de un área de plantas aparentemente sanas y verdes. Al acuerdo con la página de resultado puesta abajo (Figura 4), cada muestra consta de 10 zonas de la cama, y se evaluó cada zona por 4 parámetros. En cada sitio, una muestra de planta representativa también fue extirpada y llevada al laboratorio diagnostico para análisis de su composición mineral.
Resultados: Los datos en las tablas 1 y 2 abajo representan un promedio de las dos muestras sacadas para plantas amarillas y plantas verdes. Para mejor interpretar los datos, juntamos unas zonas de ubicación similar. Entonces, zonas 9 y 10 representan la superficie de la cama, zonas 1, 2 y 3 representan el suelo directamente debajo de la cinta de goteo, zona 8 la zona de la planta, zona 7 la zona de raíz y las zonas 6, 5, y 4 las zonas directamente abajo la zona de raíz 7.

Además mírense al agua de riego. Como es común en el norte del condado de Monterey, este campo recibe su agua como una mezcla de agua reciclada combinada con agua del pozo o del rio. Un reporte como un ejemplo de agua mezclada usada en este rancho se dispone de Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency:

En la muestra sacada de la combinación de agua reciclada y agua del rio, conductividad electrico (EC) fue 1.3 dS/m, sodio 118 ppm, cloruro 160 ppm y SAR ajustado de 3.4 (proporción de adsorción de sodio, un índice de peligro de sodio ajustado por la cantidad de calcio en el agua de riego).
Discusión: El pH del suelo en las camas en todas las zonas es muy alto, lo cual no nos sorprende porque el porcentaje alto de los carbonatos (cal) en todas las partes. Uno puede percatar también que acumulaciones de nitratos, fosfatos y potasio sean bastante más altas en las áreas de plantas amarillas, probablemente por tener esas plantas capacidad reducida de absorber estos nutrientes continuadamente aplicados por el fertilizante. Valdrá la pena enseñar que los nitratos en las concentraciones elevadas en estos suelos puedan ser tóxicos a plantas así que aceleran el empeoramiento de las mismas.
Nitritos generado de amonio en condiciones anaeróbicas son cero y esto indica aeración adecuada de la cama.
En términos del agua de riego, encontramos que el agua usada en este rancho se puede usar con unas restricciones para regar cultivos moderadamente susceptibles a salinidad tal como fresas. En palabras simples, esta agua no es espectacular, pero es OK.
Entonces, parece que los culpables de este campo sean las cantidades acumuladas de cloruro y sodio. Generalmente cultivos en nuestra área crecen mejor cuando los niveles de sodio en suelo son menos de 250 ppm y de cloruro menos de 100 ppm.
Los promedios de las cantidades de sodio y cloruro por todas las muestras están encimas de 250 ppm y 100 ppm, respetivamente. Tan altos como sean, las concentraciones de ambos iones no varían mucho en las varias zonas adentro de la cama, sea de planta, raíces o las zonas en su redor, tampoco no importa si viene el suelo de las plantas amarillas o de las plantas verdes. Sin embargo, hay diferencias substantivas en las concentraciones de estos iones en las zonas 9 y 10 (la superficie de la cama) entre muestras de plantas verdes y de plantas amarillas. Por ejemplo, en el promedio hay una acumulación de sodio casi doble además mucho más cloruro en las zonas de superficie de las plantas amarillas que por las plantas verdes. Esto nos indica que aunque estas cantidades grandes de sodio y cloruro estén acumulándose fuera las zonas de planta y raíces a través de evaporación, todavía están traspasando por estas zonas en su viaje de la cinta de goteo a la superficie de las zonas 9 y 10. No es difícil entonces imaginar que durante esta transición las plantas amarillas están acumulando estas sales y por este proceso obtienen la cuádruple acumulación de sodio y la 40% aumento de cloruro que observamos en los tejidos de hoja de las plantas amarillas sobre los tejidos obtenidos de las plantas verdes.
Aun más, es notable que la cantidad de cal (CaCO3) sea alta en todas las muestras. Esto indica que mucho cal que salga del agua de riego está precipitando y no es capaz de limitar suficientemente el sodio cambiable. Por eso el peligro de sodio es también alto. Esto explicará hasta un cierto punto porque áreas de plantas muy cerca responden diferente, porque en unas áreas más cal precipita que en otras.
Mi conclusión de todo este trabajo es en este caso de plantas amarillas en las cercanías de Castroville es que la ingestión de sodio y cloruro por las plantas así afectadas es muy alta y que por eso estas mismas están envenenadas por sal.

Son desde hace más de 30 años que la Universidad de California publicó una guía de cómo hacer diagnosis de nutrientes en la hoja de fresa. (Publication 4098, ‘Strawberry deficiency symptoms: a visual and plant análisis guide to fertilization, publicado en 1980). En los años desde entonces, prácticas de producción y expectativas de rendimiento han cambiado dramáticamente. En 2010 empezamos un proyecto, auspiciado por la Comisión de Fresa de California, a fin de re-evaluar los rangos de suficiencia de nutrientes de hoja y de peciolo. Contando con la colaboración de muchos productores de fresa de los distritos de Watsonville- Salinas y Santa Maria colectamos muestras de hojas y pecíolos de más de 50 campos de producción de la variedad ‘Albion’ de las campañas de producción de los últimos dos años. De cada campo se colectó cinco veces por la estación, desde la primavera hasta el fin de setiembre, con el intento de documentar el rumbo de concentraciones de nutrientes de antes de producción de fruta hasta el periódo pos-producción. Muestras de hojas fueron analizado por concentración toda de nitrógeno (N), fósforo (P), potasio (K), calcio (Ca), magnesio (Mg), azufre (S), zinc (Zn), manganeso (Mn), hierro (Fe), y cobre (Cu). Pecíolos fueron analizados para concentraciones de NO3-N, PO4-P y K.
Después de cumplir la estación de producción los productores participantes nos dieron información sobre su rendimiento, lo que nos dio la oportunidad de categorizar los campos como de ‘rendimiento alto’ y ‘rendimiento bajo’. Entonces aplicamos un proceso llamado ‘DRIS’ (Sistema de Diagnosis y Recomendación Integrado) a evaluar matemáticamente la diferencia entre concentraciones de nutrientes tanto como proporciones de estos entre campos de rendimiento alto y rendimiento bajo. Este proceso nos permitió a identificar cuales de los campos de rendimiento alto fueron idealmente balanceado nutricionalmente. De este grupo de campos de rendimientos altos y balanceados nutricionalmente, fuemos habilitados de calcular un rango de suficiencia ‘DRIS’ para cada nutriente en cada etapa de crecimiento del cultivo.
La Figura 1 abajo demuestra que concentraciones de N, P y K fueron lo más alto antes de empezar la cosecha, lo cual fue hacía el fin de febrero en Santa Maria y hacía el fin de marzo en Watsonville – Salinas (“sampling stage 1" en el gráfico abajo) y después declinaron a un nivel razonablemente estable durante el trascurso de la cosecha (“sampling stages 3 a 5", quiere decir mayo a julio en Santa Maria y junio a agosto en Watsonville-Salinas). El declive en concentraciones de macronutrientes en las hojas durante el pico de la cosecha se esperó de antemano porque pasa lo mismo en muchos cultivos fructíferos por el hecho de que las hojas trasladan nutrientes a la fruta en desarrollo. Por la otra mano, concentraciones de micronutrientes subieron desde la primera etapa a la plena cosecha en el caso de boro, calcio y hierro, o quedaron estables y no cambiaron por toda la estación. Las barras verticales por cada punto de dato en la figura 1 abajo enseñan un rango de valores típico de los campos de rendimiento alto y balanceados nutricionalmente. Estos son los rangos de suficiencia de ‘DRIS’ y se puede confiar que estas concentraciones de nutrientes son adecuadas para producción fuerte y de alto rendimiento.
La Tabla 1 abajo pone en forma la lista los rangos de suficiencia de nutrientes en la hoja para las etapas de pre-cosecha y de la cosecha. Para comparar, ambos rangos de suficiencia dados en la publicación 4098 de UC y de la guía actual de la Universidad de Florida se incluye aquí también. Aunque para la mayoría de los nutrientes los rangos se equivalgan mucho, para otros hay diferencias notables. Cuando el rango de suficiencia de DRIS sea significativamente más alto que otros recursos (por ejemplo Ca, Mn y Fe) es porque estos sean consumidos en niveles muy en exceso de lo que necesita la planta. Para estos nutrientes un resultado del laboratorio marginalmente abajo del rango DRIS no será una cosa preocupante.
Para unos nutrientes (N, Zn y Cu) el rango de suficiencia de DRIS cayo debajo de otras recomendaciones. Tenemos confianza que los rangos de DRIS representan suficiencia de nutrientes por el hecho de que fueron determinados por medir niveles común en campos de fresa muy productivos. Por usar una sistema de encuestas de muchos campos, se aseguró un rango amplio de condiciones y prácticas del agricultor. También, para los tres nutrientes la concentración promedia de los campos de rendimiento alto y rendimiento bajo fueron prácticamente igual, lo que sugiere que la disponibilidad de estos nutrientes no limitó rendimientos.
La Figura 2 abajo demuestra las tendencias de concentraciones de nutrientes de peciolo por el correr de la estación. Niveles de nitrato (NO3-N) de peciolo fueron tan variables a hacer estos prácticamente sin valor como un método diagnostico. Durante el pico de la cosecha de fruta, lo cual será nuestras fechas de muestras 3 y 4, nitratos de peciolo en campos de alta producción variaban de menos de 200 ppm hasta 2,600 ppm. Mientras creemos que concentración total de hoja sea más confiable, los datos de este estudio nuestro sugieren que mantener nitratos de peciolo arriba de 1000 ppm antes del comienzo de cosecha y arriba de 400 ppm durante el pico de la cosecha sea adecuado a mantener productividad alta. Dado la alta variabilidad de nitratos de peciolo es posible que concentraciones menos de 400 ppm sean adecuadas durante el verano.
Niveles de fosfatos (PO4-P) de peciolo fueron menos variables que niveles de nitrato en el peciolo. Mantener los fosfatos arriba de 1,200 ppm por el correr de la estación debe asegurar suficiencia. Dado la alta disponibilidad de fósforo en los suelos de la costa californiana en rotación con cultivos de verduras, este nivel probablemente es más que el dicho valor crítico. Mantener potasio (K) arriba de 2.5% antes de empezar la cosecha y arriba de 1.5% durante el pico de la cosecha parece ser adecuado.

Durante la campaña de producción del año 2010 conducimos una encuesta de aproximadamente 30 granjas del ramo comercial en el distrito de Watsonville- Salinas al fin de desarrollar información sobre los requisitos nutritivos de fresa, además de prácticas de abonamiento actuales. Tomamos muestras de plantas enteras en cuatro campos, dos plantados a la variedad ‘Albion’ y dos plantados a una variedad día neutro privada. En todos los campos la ingestión de nitrógeno por la planta fue lenta en los meses invernales, por ejemplo toda la ingestión de nitrógeno hasta el fin de marzo fue menos de 20 libras (9 kg). Desde este punto, ingestión de nitrógeno fue bastante fija, teniendo un promedio de 1-1.2 lb (0.5-0.55 kg) por acre (0.4 Ha) por día. Al fin de agosto, ingestión de nitrógeno total tuvo un rango entre 140-190 libras por acre (140 kg/Ha a 190 kg/ Ha), con tasas más altas en campos más productivas. Medidas de ingestión de fósforo y potasio tenían un promedio de 40 a 230 libras por acre, respectivamente.
Muestras del suelo mostraron que la mayoría de los campos empezaron la campaña con altos niveles de fósforo y potasio en su análisis, y en muchos casos tan altos que abonar con estos dos nutrientes no sería un requisito para cumplir una cosecha buena y adecuada. Sin embargo, parece que productores de fresa sigan una receta de preplanta en cuanto de abonamiento y aplican la típica mixtura de fresa de acción demorada (N-P-K) sin tener en cuenta la concentración de estos nutrientes en el análisis del suelo. La eficiencia del fertilizante de nitrógeno tiene también sus dudas. El nitrógeno de los abonos de preplanta de acción demorada se dispone en una tasa relativamente fija por seis a ocho meses, lo que quiere decir si uno aplica hacía el fin de octubre muy probablemente más que la mitad del nitrógeno será soltado antes del fin de marzo. Ya que ingestión del nitrógeno antes del fin de marzo solo sume a 20 libras por acre, cualquier nitrógeno del abono soltado por este tiempo se sujeta a lixiviación por lluvias o riego. Una cantidad moderada de nitrógeno de los abonos de preplanta de acción demorada proporciona un nivel de seguridad que algo de nitrógeno será disponible en el invierno, pero una aplicación muy grande en el otoño tiene alta probabilidad de ser ineficiente.
La mayoría de los productores en nuestro estudio nos dieron copias de su documentación del abonamiento. En promedio, ellos aplicaron un total de 187 libras de nitrógeno por acre (187 kg/ Ha), más o menos la mitad preplanta y la mitad suplemental por el goteo. Sin embargo, habían diferencias grandes entre productores en su manejo de nitrógeno, y tasas del uso por toda la estación variaban desde menos de 150 libras nitrógeno por acre a 300 libras nitrógeno por acre, y algunos productores usaron casi toda en la preplanta, y otros aplicaron casi todo en lo suplemental por el goteo. No encontramos correlación entre la cantidad del nitrógeno usado y rendimiento de fruta.
