Esta oficina ha tratado de varios pedidos de información de la drosófila de alas manchadas en moras y fresas, sobre todo de ranchos de escala pequeña, y estos en su mayoría granjas certificadas para producción orgánica.
Vamos a hacer un repaso breve en la mejor manera de manejar drosófila de alas manchadas en estos casos de ranchos pequeños manejados en una manera orgánica:
Uno debe dirigirse a este problema en dos maneras. La primera es usar el insecticida Entrust (ingrediente activo spinosad) como una aplicación a aspersión es recomendado a la misma vez, a la medida de lo posible, uno va removiendo las frutas malformadas, viejas y podridas del campo y echándolas fuera del campo sino en un basurero en un pozo excavado de la tierra. Puede ser útil para productores de fresa aplastar la fruta echada en el surco con un paso del tractor para fomentar el reseco rápido de la fruta y eliminar pronto la posibilidad de la larva de éste peste a cumplir su ciclo de vida. Entonces el insecticida aplicado está reduciendo el número de adultos de este mosco, a la misma vez que todas las vías de aumento de población se vaya eliminando. Fruta buena se cosecha y vende, fruta mala se remueve y destruye, así que no sobra la posibilidad de cumplir su ciclo de vida y tornarse a más moscos.
Aunque lo descrito arriba parezca muy bien, dos años de investigaciones en el campo nos informa que el removimiento de la fruta del campo solo no va a ser suficiente de bajar las poblaciones de la drosófila de alas manchadas a niveles aceptables. Siempre habrá una fruta que falto de ser cosechada y esa fruta misma servirá a apestar una vez más el campo. Por este hecho siempre el programa recomendado de controlar el mosco es aplicar insecticida junto con las prácticas de sanitación.
La última palabra es darse cuenta de lo que está pasando en el alrededor de su campo de producción. ¿Hay lugares de poblaciones no controladas a lado o arbustos de zarzamora silvestre? Ambas áreas sirven como hospederas de drosófila de alas manchadas y le benéfica a Ud. obtener un cierto nivel de control allí también.

Introducción: Un propósito de este blog es educar al lector e informarle en desafíos y temas emergentes en nuestras fresas y moras. Aun más, también quisiéramos repasar y actualizar temas comunes y concurrentes de cuales nuestros lectores ya conocen por una parte. El artículo que sigue es un repaso de una enfermedad importante que afecta las industrias de fresa y mora (frambuesa): molde gris causado por el patógeno Botrytis cinérea.
Organismo causal: Botrytis cinérea pertenece al fílum fungal Deuteromycota, lo cual se conoce de vez en cuando como el grupo de hongos imperfectos y estos reproducen por esporos asexuales, también conocidos como conidias. El estado de Botrytis que reproduce sexualmente no se ha encontrado en fresa ni en la mora (o frambuesa). El micelio joven de este hongo es septado, con ramas, y básicamente sin color. Cuando este hongo se cultive en agar de dextrosa de papa (un substrato común para cultivar hongos y conocido por su acrónimo PDA en ingles), Botrytis cinérea es primeramente blanco y después torna gris en cuanto se formen los esporos. Las estructuras que producen los esporos son ramificados, hasta 5 mm de alto, y un color gris ligero a oscuro. Aun con magnificación baja del microscopio, uno sí puede ver los ramos de esporos muy parecidos al los racimos de uva (véase a la sexta foto abajo).
Síntomas en la fruta: La podrición proveniente de Botrytis es fácil de distinguir de las otras podriciones de fruta que ocurrirán en las fresas y moras. Generalmente, podrición de Botrytis empezará como una mancha de color marrón ligero a gris (véase a la tercera foto abajo) sin ningún margen distinto alrededor del área afectada. Esta mancha mantiene una textura firme en cuanto crezca y una fruta aun completamente cubierta de Botrytis mantendrá su forma original sin deshacerse. Después de unas días y si las condiciones lo favorecen, quiere decir temperaturas entre 59o- 77oF (15o- 25oC), un crecimiento gris a marrón constando de millones de esporos aparecerá en la superficie de fruta infectada.
Ciclo de la enfermedad: Infecciones de Botrytis en la costa central generalmente empiezan cuando el esporo se aterrice en la flor de la fresa o de la mora. Dado temperaturas más templadas y la presencia del agua, el esporo germina y infecta la flor. Si condiciones son muy favorables, la enfermedad progresará en los mismos tejidos de la flor y resultará en flores infeccionadas que no podrán avanzar a ser una fruta. Infecciones parciales pueden causar lesiones marrones en el receptáculo; tales flores no producirán fruta normalmente formadas. En otros casos, el invadiente Botrytis resulta invernar allí y no seguirá hasta en contenido del azúcar conviene para más desarrollo del hongo. En este punto la enfermedad será evidente por sus lesiones marrones subsecuentemente volviendo a ser un crecimiento aterciopelado de color gris que ocurre en una fruta madura. Si las condiciones no favorecen más desarrollo de la enfermedad, el crecimiento parará y la lesión seca y torna a una textura de cuero.
De tal manera que Botrytis coloniza agresivamente heridos, infección directa ocurriría si la fruta es dañada físicamente, por ejemplo por fricción causado por movimiento del aire, injurias de insectos o extremos del clima. Fruta madura es especialmente susceptible a infecciones por su alto contenido del azúcar y tejidos sensibles. Por esta razón, Botrtyis es un componente importante de las pérdidas de pos-cosecha.
Epidemiología: Esporos de Botrytis están por toda parte. Este hongo crece bien en tejidos senescentes y muertos tales como ramas y hojas de fresa y mora, y de residuos de otros cultivos adyacentes. Esporos son traídos por viento o salpicaduras de lluvia a los tejidos de flores y frutas. Es importante a notar que la presencia de humedad por unas horas consecutivas es necesario para germinación del esporo. Entonces, desarrollo de la enfermedad de molde gris es lo más fuerte en condiciones humedas y templadas, tales como durante las lluvias y nieblas (llamadas “brisas” por el vernáculo local) experimentadas con frecuencia aquí en la zona de la costa central.
Control: Productores y administradores del campo deben tomar una estrategia de tres aspectos:
Fungicidas: Hay un universo substantivo de fungicidas disponibles para el control de molde gris en las fresas y moras. Una lista de estos para cada cultivo se dispone en el sitio (http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/crops-agriculture.html ). El punto clave para agricultores es aplicar el fungicida ANTES de lluvias y nieblas. Como se enfatizó arriba, esporos de Botrytis necesitan agua libre para germinar así que fungicidas, los cuales actúan de proteger contra infección, deben estar puestos antes de llegar el agua. Vale la pena notar que el uso de adyuvantes, los cuales sirven para mejor distribuir el fungicida por la superficie de la planta como estabilizarlos, son fuertemente recomendados de ser usados.
Fitosanidad: Como cada fruto infectado tendrá un casi sinnúmero de esporos de Botrytis, remover fruta infectada de alredor de la planta durante la campaña de la cosecha ayuda en reducir la potencia de más infección de molde gris. No es necesario de quitarlas totalmente del campo, ya que deposición de la fruta enferma en la raya y su subsecuente destrucción por el trafico peatonal además del paso de maquinaria de campo es suficiente. También, remover hojas muertas de vez en cuando puede beneficiar una plantación sana porque quita un fuente más de inoculo de Botrytis mientras fomenta circulación del aire manteniendo la planta seca.
Manejo de humedad: Es critico saber que la agua libre es esencial al desarrollo de molde gris causado por Botrytis y este le da al agricultor un arma fuerte en contra de esta enfermedad. En la fresa, hay que plantar en una manera que cuenta con el tamaño final de la planta y que esto permite suficiente circulación del aire alrededor de la planta. Manejar el enfriamiento del trasplante es una manera de obtener el tamaño deseado – variedades de día corto como ‘Chandler’ y ‘Camarosa’ no se debe acondicionar con frío más de tres días y variedades de día neutro como ‘San Andreas’ y ‘Albion’ no se debe acondicionar con frío más de 18 días. El uso de cintas de goteo, una práctica universal en el estado de California, es preciso para no contribuir aun más condiciones favorables a esta enfermedad.
El uso de túneles de hule sobre plantaciones de mora resulta en una reducción tremenda de humedad de lluvias y nieblas corriendo por la planta y esto baja la cantidad de molde gris tanto que aplicaciones de fungicidas prácticamente no sean necesarias. No hay un paso más grande que se puede tomar en el control de molde gris en la mora que alzar un túnel sobre ellas.
Antes de usar cualquier fungicida, consultar con la oficina local de comisión de agricultura y consultar con la etiqueta para información más actualizada del uso correcto del producto.

Lo que sigue aquí es sobre una muestra de larvas de una avispa de la familia Tenthredinidae que fue entregada a esta oficina el 25 de mayo. Aparentemente sin nombre común en español, esta avispa probablemente es Monophadnoides geniculatus, y es un insecto que no se suele ver en la Costa Central de California. Sin embargo, esta infestación parecía ser aguda.
Como se puede ver en las fotos abajo, las larvas de esta avispa de la mora son cerdosos y son como 10 a 13 milímetros de largo. El daño de la hoja es característico y consta de una red de hoyos en las hojas infestadas. La literatura describe hojas consumidas hasta que sobren sólo unas venas, pero nunca he visto yo eso aquí.
La parte importante para productores y consultores de mora en nuestra zona es que este insecto de la familia Tenthredinidae esta en el orden de insectos Hymenoptera. Quiere decir que es una avispa, y no un mosco ni una polilla. La hembra injiere sus huevos en las hojas en mayo, y larva obviamente sala ahora. Después de comer por cuestión de dos o tres semanas, la larva cae al suelo para formar una pupa desde la cual emerge en la primavera del año siguiente. Hay sólo una generación por año.
De punto de vista de manejo de plagas en la Costa Central, el daño ligero que vemos en la hoja normalmente no es perjudicial a la planta y de cualquier manera es limitada a dos o tres semanas. Sin embargo, productores quienes se preocupan de contaminación de la fruta cosechada a raíz de una infestación pesada de esta avispa tal vez quieren tratar con un insecticida.

El tiempo tan cálido de la semana pasada ha causado una cierta cantidad de insolación en la fruta de mora (frambuesa) de nuestra zona. Tal como se ve en las fotos abajo, insolación se manifiesta como un color blanco a marrón de las drupas las cuales normalmente son rojas.
El episodio actual de insolación se pone en correlación con las temperaturas altas de la semana pasada, y esto es consistente con lo que hemos visto en el pasado. Cuando en la costa central vayamos repentinamente de temperaturas constantes de 70oF (21 oC) a 90 oF (32 oC) acompañada con una ausencia de niebla, experimentamos casi sin lugar a duda aumento en la incidencia de insolación.
Mientras aparece que insolación de fruta de mora sea causada por simplemente calor, es en realidad algo más complicado y de hecho es radiación solar que causa el problema. Aparentemente esta radiación origina suficientes cambios fisiológicos en la fruta de descolorarla pero no hasta el punto de ser necrótico inmediatamente. Aire húmedo, lo cual en nuestra área tiende a ser fresco, pesado de niebla, distribuye y absorbe radiación del Sol, mientras aire caliente tiende de no llevar mucha humedad y subsecuentemente la potencia de distribuir radiación y prevenir estos rayos de dañar las drupas. Tiempo de viento es aun peor, ya que esta llevando la humedad fuera del cultivo.
Hay unas soluciones a este problema. Uno, lo más impractico, es introducir humedad de arriba por aspersión al cultivo de la mora. Es mejor por supuesto en este caso a hacer esta actividad por la mañana para asegurar que las flores y la fruta quedan secas antes de la noche. Otra solución es usar una manera de media-sombra a cubrir las plantas. Esto es algo que muchos productores de mora en nuestra zona están cumpliendo en la forma de los túneles ya ampliamente utilizados. Finalmente, se sabe que unas variedades son más susceptibles a la insolación, así que si uno está teniendo problemas con una variedad es mejor buscar otra.
