I am happy to announce the release of 26 academic positions (http://ucanr.edu/sites/anrstaff/files/253192.pdf) for a new round of hiring over the next 2 years.
These positions are now in the queue and will be released for recruitment in phases as we continue recruiting for more than 25 specialist and advisor positions yet unfilled from the 2014 process. This new release continues our commitment for hiring to exceed projected turnover, thus achieving our goal of academic growth. ANR will be making additional travel support available for UC Cooperative Extension specialists to collaborate with UCCE advisors in FY 2016/17. With the level of funds available, each specialist may apply for up to $2,500 for FY 2016/17 (funds must be expended by June 30, 2017). These travel funds must be utilized by the UCCE specialists only and cannot be used for out-of-state travel.

VP Barbara Allen-Diaz charged the ANR Academic Assembly Council to seek broad and diverse input on the roles, responsibilities and relationships within the statewide ANR network, in order to build on our strengths and prepare for a future that retains our relevance internally (to UC) and externally (to our California communities/stakeholders and beyond).
Areas of current discussions include:
- Is campus research finding its way through county channels to address applied issues of our stakeholders?
- As advisors take on growing responsibilities within larger geographic areas, are we creating a hybrid position that may be more like regional specialists than a traditional advisor?...

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Smith-Lever Act on May 8, 1914, providing funding to the nation’s land-grant universities in order to develop and deliver “practical applications of research knowledge.” This provided the foundation for the beginnings of UC Cooperative Extension.
I have appointed a committee to plan activities that will celebrate UC Cooperative Extension’s centennial and capitalize on this important opportunity to raise awareness among both external and internal audiences.
