Dear Colleagues,
Today, I am announcing the first group of academic positions that I have approved for recruitment and hiring. As discussed below, these positions will be funded by salary reversions resulting from retirements and separations that have occurred over the last year.
In response to the request for proposals issued last fall, members of the ANR community submitted 138 advisor and specialist positions. Program Council has completed its work and has forwarded recommendations for positions with strategic importance to our statewide program needs.

On March 8, VP Dan Dooley met with the county directors to discuss the budgets for the UC system and for ANR, multi-county partnerships and recruiting for advisors and specialists.
The governor has proposed a $500 million cut to UC’s budget. Dooley said that the governor won’t sign a budget that isn’t structurally balanced so if the tax extensions don’t get on a special June ballot and approved, UC may be faced with a $1 billion cut.
Referring to the state budget allocation, Dooley said, “The reality is we’re not going to know what our next fiscal year’s budget is until after the June election.”

Colleagues,
In his State of the State address on Monday, Governor Brown reinforced the fact that our budget difficulties are unprecedented and that virtually everything that depends on state funding must adapt to new realities.
While many things must happen before we have a final state budget, here are some things we do know:
- The governor’s budget proposes a $500 million cut for UC in 2011-12, a 16.4 percent reduction. State budget cuts could be deeper if proposed tax extensions fail because the cuts cover only half of the shortfall in state revenues.

All members of ANR are invited to join VP Dooley for a 60-minute ANR town hall meeting on Adobe Connect on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 9 a.m. PDT. For those unable to attend online, a recording of the event will be posted.
Dooley will discuss the impact of the newly signed California state budget on UC and ANR. There will also be time set aside for questions and answers.
