Plenty of olive trees in public spaces filled with beautiful green olives for home curing. I've already picked about 4 pounds from a local Vacaville baseball park (Keating) and didn't even make a dent in the potential harvest. In fact, everywhere I look I see more potential olive harvests all around town. Only have to mind olive fly infected fruits.

I cure with lye. It's a lot easier and waaaaay faster than the salt and water method and my results have been delicious. With the huge amounts of free harvest available (people are happy NOT to have the olives fully ripen and create messes), why bother with your own messy trees?

That said, of course I am planning a small orchard of 3 to 4 olive trees on my 2 acres in Gibson Canyon and I will definately take your advise and plant far enough away from neighbors and improved areas of my property.

Enjoy, and don't be intimidated by the seemingly complex and tiresome process of home cured olives. Its easy and fun once you get comfortable with it!
