Empezando en los medios de mayo a junio, productores de fresa y otros profesionales han observado un problema conocido como “bronceo” en la costa central. A un cierto grado este problema ocurre cada año, pero puede resultar en pérdidas económicas grandes de vez en cuando. Fruta bronceada tiene superficies secas y escabrosas que dejan la fruta no ser vendible (véase a las fotos 1 y 2 abajo). La piel de tal fruta después puede rajarse.
Hay tres clases de bronceo. Tipo I de bronceo ocurre en partes distintas de la fruta, muchas veces abajo del calíz o alrededor de las dichas semillas (achenes) y esto es causado por el comer de los insectos, mayormente los trips (daño físico por fricción (véase a la foto 3 abajo)). Bronceo de Tipo II es causado por las aplicaciones de pesticidas las cuales resultan en bronceo a un lado de la fruta y no en el otro. Compare esto con bronceo de Tipo III que abarca prácticamente la superficie entera de la fruta, ocurre en ciertas épocas de tiempo y puede resultar en pérdidas devastadoras del cultivo. Es notable que bronceo de Tipo III en la Costa Central de California tiende a ocurrir cuando haga calor abajo cielos soleados.
Se ha demostrado a través de experimentos del campo que bronceo de Tipo III es asociado con exposición a un estrés ambiental que incluye entre si fuerte radiación solar, temperaturas altas y humedad relativamente baja. El problema de Tipo III no es causado por aplicaciones de azufre ni el comer de trips, ácaros y otras plagas.
El problema de bronceo es difícil de manejar y prevenir. Cultivos de fresa difieran en su susceptibilidad a bronceo de Tipo III, así que los productores deban de considerar este factor cuando seleccionan variedades para plantar. Generalmente, se recomienda cultivar la fresa con el intento de reducir el estrés fisiológico a las plantas. Productores y otros profesionales astutos se dieron cuenta que campos de producción que recibieron aplicaciones de insecticidas o fungicidas antes de un periodo de riesgo alto de bronceo, quiere decir de altas temperaturas y de radiación intensa del Sol, experimentaron menos bronceo que lugares adyacentes no tratados.
Esta situación probablemente ocurrió porque muchos pesticidas contienen químicas que protejan los productos de radiación solar y ultravioleta, y consecuentemente estas aplicaciones brindan protección semejante a la fruta de fresa.

Abajo se ve unas fotos de cómo parece palomilla marrón de manzana (light brown apple moth o LBAM en inglés) en la fresa. Este es la especie de enrollador de hoja que invadió a California de la cual actualmente se encuentra abajo un régimen de cuarentena. Aunque tradicionalmente no se haya realizado infestaciones de enrolladores de hoja en la fresa cultivada en la costa central, ahora mismo hay varios productores quienes se enfrentan a muchos problemas con esto. Además, los inspectores del USDA han descubierto y han comprobado en varias ocasiones LBAM en fresas de la zona. Por eso, sigue estando la situación imperativa de actuarse cuando se encuentra evidencia de infestación de enrolladores de hoja por peligro de sufrir una clausura a las manos del USDA.
No todas las larvas verdes son enrolladores de hoja. Como se ve en la última foto abajo, gusano soldado de remolacha puede dañar la fruta de fresa. Productores, PCAs además de otros profesionales deben darse cuenta de la raya distinta del color blanco al costado del gusano y la mancha negra arriba de la segunda pierna para hacer esta determinación.

Hay muchas causas de malformación de la fruta de mora, incluyendo tiempo no favorable, genética o virus. Sin embargo, la causa más común es una carencia de polinizadores, tales como abejas silvestres y domesticas, durante el período de floración. Aunque las flores de mora puedan polinizarse a si misma, todavía 90 a 95% de polinización se atribuye a la actividad de abejas. Generalmente, dos colmenas fuertes se recomiendan mantener por cada acre de moras.
Para entender como polinización incompleta puede resultar en fruta malformada, es importante de profundizarse del carácter de la flor de la mora. La flor se compone de 100 125 pistilos, a los cuales se precisa transferir los granos del polen para criar una semilla madura y la drupa alrededor.
Acerca de 75 a 85 drupas componen una fruta de mora y cada drupa individual tiene la misma estructura que una fruta de ciruela, cereza o durazno. Si cada uno de esas drupas no es polinizada, la integridad de la fruta queda comprometida. Esto es porque la drupa inmadura y pequeña no contribuye a la estructura y consistencia de lo entero, y la fruta resultante es malformada y migajada.
Las fotos abajo demuestran polinización irregular en fruta de mora. En este caso, muchas de las drupas en la punta aparentemente no se han sido polinizadas, y son inmaduras y pequeñas. Aun más, uno puede ver claramente en la segunda foto el exceso de néctar en la flor, porque simplemente las abejas no la está colectando. Después, es seguro que este néctar causará problemas con moho negro y otros hongos, los cuales florecen en este medio tan rico de azucar y nutrientes.
Hay varias cosas que el agricultor debe tomarse en cuenta en cuanto del manejo de abejas:
1: Los enjambres tienen de ser fuertes. Han de haber muchas celdas en los panales y muchas abejas en las colmenas. Menos indica que la colmena está débil. Actividad de vuelo debe ser pesada, y el campo de moras literalmente debe estar hormigueando de abejas.
2. Aunque la flor de la mora sea muy atractiva a las abejas, existe la posibilidad que sean atraídas a otras flores en la vecindad. Si las abejas de un productor no se quedan en su campo, vale la pena averiguar a dónde se van.
3. Unos pesticidas, aunque no sean directamente tóxico a las abejas, posiblemente todavía las repelan. Productores deben darse cuenta de cualquier cambio del comportamiento de las abejas o fuerza de la colmena que sigue la aplicación de un pesticida.

Los tiempos lluviosos recientes en el distrito de producción de fresa de Watsonville y Salinas han criados condiciones óptimas para pudrición de fruta causada por Phytophthora. De hecho, se ha traído al laboratorio diagnostico de UCCE en Salinas muestras de fruta podrida que ya fueron probadas positivas para Phytophthora juntos con indicaciones de pérdidas significativas en los campos de fresa debido a este mismo.
Pudrición de fruta de Phytophthora puede afectar fruta verde a rosada y no madura (véase a Foto 1 abajo), además de poder afectar la fruta completamente madura y roja (véase a Foto 2 y 3 abajo). Síntomas constan de lesiones blancas a gris o marrón amarillo. Lesiones frecuentemente empiezan como áreas redondas localizadas que luego engrandan a manchas de forma irregular que abarcan casi toda la fruta. Al tocarlo, el área infectada es muy blanda. No se ve externamente en estas lesiones cuerpos fructíferos y otras estructuras típicas de muchos hongos. Al examinar tejidos internos de fruta con un microscopio, la apariencia diagnostica de micelio de Phytophthora, lo que sea hifa relativamente gruesa que carece de paredes celulares adentro, puede ser observado (véase a Foto 4 abajo). Phytophthora cactorum es la especie principal que causa esta manera de pudrición y también este mismo causa pudrición de corona.
Productores y otros profesionales del ramo agrícola deben recordarse que antracnosis de fruta causado por el patógeno Colletotrichum acutatum, a unos puede aparecer semejante a infecciones de Phytophthora. Sin embargo, lesiones de fruta causadas por antracnosis son hundidas, más o menos redondas, de una textura firme, y tienen un color de marrón a negro (véase a Foto 5 abajo). En las etapas más avanzadas en condiciones húmidas, lesiones de antracnosis pueden mostrar micelio blanco con masas de esporos de un color rosado a anaranjado.

Tendrá lugar una reunión de la extensión cooperativa de la universidad de California el 6 de mayo acerca de la palomilla marrón de manzana (LBAM) en moras. Hay bastante información que se ha generado ya, y esta junta servirá como una buena ocasión de presentarla por varios investigadores involucrados.
