La infestación reciente de los cultivos en el área de la Costa Central por la mosca de vinagre de cereza (“cherry vinegar fly” en inglés) es seria.
Normalmente, se asocia la mosca de vinagre con fruta vieja y podrida, y no se piensa que ese es algo más que una incomodidad. Sin embargo, la mosca de vinagre de cereza es diferente de las otras moscas de vinagre por poner sus huevillos en fruta todavía no cosechada. La larva entonces come adentro de la fruta y sale para formarse a la pupa. El comer de la larva, mientras dañoso en si, expone la fruta a infecciones de hongos y bacteria.
Para productores, una peste como mosca de vinagre de cereza presenta varios desafíos. El primer desafío es que tres estados del desarrollo de la mosca, quiere decir el huevillo, la larva y la pupa, no son accesibles a métodos convencionales del control. Segundo, los números muy altos que se encuentra en el campo de producción además la potencia de la hembra de propagarse lo hace muy difícil reducir la población a niveles económicos aceptables rápidamente.
Aunque aparentemente nueva al condado de Santa Cruz y otras áreas de California, la situación de la mosca de vinagre de cereza no es insólita. Infestaciones de otras moscas de fruta (no moscas de vinagre) en las islas de Hawai, California y Florida han tenido éxito por utilizar programas de manejo de varias facetas, lo que nos puede guiar en nuestra formación de una estrategia de manejar la mosca de vinagre de cereza.
Un programa de control de mosca de vinagre de cereza probablemente constará de tres partes esenciales:
1. Uso de cebos. Cebos para moscas, tales como GF 120 o NuLure, utilizan elementos ligeramente tóxicos a otros animales además al medioambiente así que tengan un efecto mínimo a predadores, parasitoides y abejas. Sin embargo, como la eficacia de cualquier cebo y elemento tóxico disminuye por el correr del tiempo, se necesita reaplicar estas materias, tal vez semanalmente o dos veces al mes.
2. Higiene del campo. Fruta infestada que se deja en el campo permite huevos y larvas desarrollarse y servir como una fuente de más moscas después. Toda la fruta infestada debe ser tirada del campo y ser destruida. La destrucción de fruta tiene que ser total, por ejemplo por entierro o echada en un contenedor bien cerrado.
3. Al observar otros programas exitosos del manejo de moscas de fruta o de vinagre, es claro que usar las prácticas descritas arriba solo funcionan bien si se aplica por un área amplia. Es importante que cada productor en un área infestada por la mosca de vinagre de cereza participe en un programa de manejo eficaz, porque un solo campo no bien manejado servirá como una fuente de infestación a los demás.

El problema actual de la mosca de vinagre de cereza (Cherry Vinegar Fly, Drosophila suzukii) en los distritos de producción de Watsonville- Salinas, Santa Maria y Oxnard subraya la importancia de saber manejarla exitosamente. Mientras pesticidas aplicados al voleo a la planta tales como Pyganic o Malatión brindan control de los adultos de esta mosca, no llegan a un control completo por no matar a las larvas metidas adentro de la fruta.
Un pesticida que se ha usado con éxito contra otras moscas similares a la mosca de vinagre de cereza es GF120 Naturalyte Fruit Fly Bait. Sin embargo, como es un cebo, GF 120 es usada en una manera muy distinta de otros pesticidas, y vale la pena repasar su uso correcto con la comunidad de productores y otros profesionales del ramo agrícola.
Ser un cebo significa que GF 120 atrae el insecto, en vez de ser entregado al insecto como en el caso de los pesticidas aplicados al voleo. Esto quiere decir que cobertura, la cual normalmente es de suma importancia, no es muy clave con un cebo.
Esto es el hecho porque la tasa de aplicación de GF 120 más agua de mezcla es menos de un galón por acre. Obviamente, no es posible a aplicar GF 120 con una maquina “airblast” (aplicador con abanico) ni otro implemento arrastrado por tractor porque la tasa es tan baja. Uno tiene que usar un aparato o implemento que puede aplicar a una tasa muy baja. Un ejemplo es el aplicador que se demuestra abajo en la primera foto. Hay también maquinas automatizadas para uso en el Valle Central de California que actualmente están usadas específicamente para aplicación de este cebo para control de la mosca de oliva.
Distribución de GF 120 quiere decir que se aplica una gota de 2 a 3 mililitros de la materia (véase la segunda foto abajo) sobre intervalos bastante amplios en el campo del cultivo. En un experimento conducido en el invierno del año pasado, se descubrió que cada 30 pies de cada lado del surco de mora fue suficiente a obtener la dosis exigida por la etiqueta.
Aunque no haya ninguna restricción en la etiqueta sobre el contacto de GF 120 con la fruta de la mora, se sugiere evitar el contacto por tener un sabor muy asco el cebo. En la mora, aplica a la base del surco unos dos o tres pies de la superficie del suelo. A este nivel aparecen la mayoría de las moscas de toda manera, así que este tiene dos propósitos. En la fresa, es mejor aplicar entre las plantas durante la primera parte de la estación cuando todavía la cama no este cubierta a hacía el medio de la planta cuando este más grande.
La forma de mezclar GF 120 es importante. Aunque este soluble en agua, cuesta bastante agitación hasta que llegue a ser en solución (mezclado cien por ciento), mucho más que otros pesticidas. Es preciso que GF 120 sea bien mezclado, para no echar la mayoría del ingrediente activo puede ser aplicado del primer tiro. Aun más, si no está bien mezclado, la solución va a ser muy gruesa y posiblemente no pasa bien por las líneas. Una vez bien mezclado GF 120, queda bien mezclado.
Finalmente, la etiqueta de GF 120 recomienda re-aplicación cada uno o dos semanas, dependiendo de la condición del tiempo. Lluvia lavaría el cebo de la planta, y los rayos solares lo descomponen. Nuestra experiencia con los túneles nos informa que el cebo parece aguantar un poco más abajo del hule, pero aun así, es recomendable aplicar cada tres o cuatro semanas.

Fresas, moras, zarzamoras y arándanos cultivados en los condados de Santa Cruz y Monterey hospedan una cierta cantidad de tortrícidos (en su mayoría arrolladores de hoja), de los cuales lo más común es el arrollador de frutales, Argyrotaenia franciscana. Adultos de arrollador de frutales son activos en la primavera y todas las etapas de vida son presentes por el correr de la estación. La actividad de la larva puede dañar las flores, fruta verde en desarrollo además de hacer túneles en fruta madura. Durante la cosecha, unas larvas del arrollador de frutales pueden caer en las cajas o botes de cosecha, y al ser descubiertos causan pérdidas significas en el mercadeo.
El aumento del problema de la palomilla café claro de la manzana (Light brown apple moth o “LBAM”), Epiphyas postvittana, debería ser de gran interés a los productores de fruta en el distrito de producción de los condados de Santa Cruz y Monterey. Mientras la palomilla café claro de la manzana sea un arrollador de hoja tal como arrollador de frutales y normalmente presente un problema semejante al arrollador de frutales descrito arriba, esto no compara al hecho que esto es un insecto regulado en un régimen de cuarentena y como consecuencia exige una perspectiva totalmente diferente en cuanto su control.
La palomilla café claro de la manzana o LBAM no es como los otros arrolladores de hojas porque el umbral de acción reguladora es solo una larva descubierta. Es decir el descubrimiento de una larva en un campo de producción resultará en escrutinio regulador significativo del mismo campo. Esto quiere decir que se sujeta la fruta del campo a una inspección detallada, tanto como aplicaciones mandatarias de pesticidas, usualmente materias como Bt, spinosyns u aceites. Así que es de importancia crucial al productor de la fruta en esta zona a bajar la probabilidad de presencia de palomilla café claro de la manzana (LBAM) tan cerca de cero que sea posible.
Trabajo hecho por esta oficina y un investigador de una empresa privada en arrollador de frutales en zarzamora en 2008 indica que spinetoram (Delegate), spinosad (Success o Entrust) y Bt (Dipel) son todos eficaces. Si fueran tres aplicaciones hechas a intervalos de dos semanas comenzadas tempranas en la estación (63 días antes de cosecha) o dos aplicaciones a intervalos de siete días comenzadas dos semanas antes de cosecha, poblaciones de arrolladores de hoja fueron profundamente reducidas o eliminadas en parcelas tratadas.
Aunque el pleito actual de la palomilla café claro de la manzana o LBAM magnifica el problema de arrolladores de hoja en fresas, moras y arándanos, los productores sí tienen las herramientas para manejarlo bien.
