I have been trapping armyworms in Delta rice since 2016, after the industry experienced an outbreak in 2015. Monitoring involves scouting for damage and deployment of pheromone bucket traps that catch the moths (Figure 1).

In Spanish Mother Nature did her part by offering spectacular weekend weather as if she wanted to participate in the community garden events on Saturday in Riverside. Community members painted the first layer of a colorful mural on a wall bordering the edible garden in an Eastside neighborhood.

Serendipity

In March 2022 we were able to visit relatives in Tampa Bay, Florida. One day we visited a lovely open-air marketplace in nearby St. Petersburg. Walking back to the car, we passed a lovely, massive tree with sturdy branches that came off the main trunk close to the ground.
