About UC Cooperative Extension

Connecting the research and innovation of the University of California (UC) with communities across Marin, Napa, and Sonoma counties.

We are the bridge between local issues and the power of UC research.

University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) brings the knowledge and resources of the University of California directly to local communities. Through local research, education, and partnerships, UCCE helps address challenges in agriculture, natural resource management, youth development, and community health.

UCCE is part of the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), a statewide network of researchers, educators, and volunteers working in every county in California. More than 180 Cooperative Extension advisors and over 100 campus-based specialists collaborate to develop practical, science-based solutions to local challenges. These experts work from more than 70 locations across the state, including county offices, research centers, and UC campuses.

UC Cooperative Extension advisors, program staff, and community educators live and work in the communities they serve, conducting applied research and delivering educational programs that develop and share equitable, collaborative, science-based solutions. These efforts support thriving communities, sustainable agriculture, resilient ecosystems, and economic prosperity across California.

Working in partnership with county governments, federal agencies, community organizations, and thousands of volunteers, UCCE provides workshops, technical assistance, educational resources, and outreach programs that translate UC research into science-based solutions with local, national, and global impact.

Regional Approach to Local Solutions

Many of the issues facing the North Bay such as wildfire resilience; water and natural resource management; stewardship of working lands; sustainable agriculture and food systems; community health, and youth development extend beyond county boundaries.

UC Cooperative Extension advisors serving Marin, Napa, and Sonoma counties collaborate regionally to conduct applied research, share expertise, and deliver educational programs that support farmers, land managers, youth, and communities throughout the North Bay. This work is strengthened by dedicated staff and volunteers in programs such as 4-H Youth Development, Master Gardeners, and Master Food Preservers, who engage in community service and education to expand UCCE’s reach and impact across the region.

By working together, UCCE expands the reach and impact of University of California research while responding to the unique needs of each county we serve.

History of Cooperative Extension

In Napa County, UC Cooperative Extension has served residents since 1914, with appointment of the first Farm Advisor, H.J. Baade.

Since then, UC scientists, advisors, educators, and volunteers have worked alongside local partners to address agricultural, environmental, and community challenges through research-based education and outreach.

Today, Cooperative Extension continues this mission by connecting communities with the research and expertise of the University of California. As part of a nationwide system, Cooperative Extension has a presence in every state, with local offices and educators working in communities to deliver research-based, locally relevant solutions.
