Master Gardeners Get Composting!

The UC Master Gardener Program is spreading the word about composting, an obligation of a $5,000 grant awarded by the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability (OOS). The goal is to demonstrate how everyone can have an impact on reducing landfill, while creating a magical ingredient for their gardens. The workshops are taught by UCCE volunteers with certification in both the Master Gardener and Master Composter Programs.

The workshops explore how easy and fun it is to recycle your fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves and garden trimmings into compost, whether you live in a single family residence or an apartment.

There are many options to consider for home composting: bin, vermiculture, grasscycling and more. Participants learn the benefits of compost, including improving soil structure, providing nutrients for plants, and suppressing weeds. It is rewarding to learn that you can turn what some consider waste into precious, organic material for your garden.

Workshops are free and offer each attendee a $30 coupon toward composting bins & supplies from the County of San Mateo OOS, and a bag of compost starter mix.
