Interior lighting in open shared areas goal: To provide sufficient lighting in all areas of the building consistent with published standards for office illumination, while accommodating the needs of individuals that require alternate levels of lighting in specific areas.
The building has been designed to operate in an open manner, with more shared open than closed private spaces. These areas share common light fixtures that are able to be switched at either 50% or 100% and controlled by shared banks of light switching. Many of the areas also have a natural light component via either windows and/or skylights.
After a recent review with ANR’s Risk and Safety Services Director, Brian Oatman, the following strategy was developed and stands ready to be deployed after the first of the year.
- All common light fixtures will be switched on at 100% which will provide for consistent illumination
- Upon assessment of the illumination within your personal workspace of the product of #1 above, anyone that would like to have their lighting evaluated is asked to use the ASK Button to place a request for evaluation and possible adjustments.
- After your request is received, a member of the EH&S team will assess your workspace and recommend modifications, where necessary and feasible. Possible adjustments might include changing the type and/or intensity of bulbs, installation of light filtering diffusers, removing bulbs completely, and other measures.
- Should the measures listed in #1, #2, and #3 above NOT achieve the required results, additional measures will be considered, which might include adding new LIGHTING, reworking the switching configuration of existing lights, and other measures.
This process has been envisioned to provide a clear, methodical process to ultimately adjust the building lighting to produce the greatest satisfaction possible to everyone.
Finally, everyone should be aware that with all the natural light in these open spaces via the windows and skylights we are expecting to experience a seasonal component of variability to the levels on interior light, this will obviously be an unfolding situation that will be monitored as we go through our first full year in the building.
We thank everyone once again for your patience as this part of the new building gets fine-tuned and completed.
