Demonstration Garden Open Hours | Calaveras County
About the Event
The explosion of color and abundance continues to delight in the garden.
At the moment, we especially recommend a visit to the Catalpa tree currently in bloom behind Tony's Teahouse near the succulent garden, scenting the area with its heavenly fragrance. Catalpa trees typically flower in late spring and early summer (usually May and June), producing large, fragrant clusters of white, orchid-like blooms. And, yes indeed, if you are inspired to plant one of your own, we do indeed have Catalpa trees available in the plant sale area.
While you're strolling about, you may notice that some garden angels have been placing rocks painted bright yellow and lettered with "BUY ME" here and there. You'll see them at the base of notable plants that we currently have available in the plant sale area, such as the amaryllis.
The Plant Sale will be open
We've got tomato starts! The Calaveras rule of thumb is to plant out your tender starts no earlier than Frog Jump. Well, the Fair is now in our rearview and the danger of damaging weather is negligible. It's a great time to pick up a tomato or two to put in the ground. We also have limited quantities of squash, melon, and more. Be sure to head back to the trees and edibles area for the full selection of herbs, grapes, artichokes, rhubarb, berry vines, figs, and more to build up your food forest.
We regularly stock dozens of kinds of plants for you to browse, including natives, all locally sourced and propagated, as well as a wide and ever-changing variety of pots, planters, collectibles, and vintage items. All sales help sustain the garden.
The Children's Garden
Fun, impromptu activities are always available for the wee ones in our charming kids' area, and perhaps you'll find inspiration for things to do with the littles in your own garden. Even without a child in tow, it's a pleasant space to visit, with cute surprises tucked into every corner.
The Free Produce Stand
Community generosity and local abundance provide for our table of free food items; the selection varies week to week based on what's thriving currently. And you never know when a kind soul will put out delectable baked goodies for us. You are invited to take home some freshly harvested yumminess—and feel free to bring your own surplus produce to share with your community.
The Free Community Pantry
Non-perishable food items are always available to share. In these trying times, we would love to receive more non-perishable items to build up the pantry's stock. We appreciate your donations, which all support local families. Thank you so much for your generosity!
The Free Seed Exchange
The seed table is always laden with choices for your planting pleasure. Pick up something new to work into your planting plan or contribute seeds you no longer need to the collection. Master Gardeners will be available to help with your planting questions.
