On the corner of my property sits a mature Aloe arborescens, commonly known as a Candelabra Aloe, or Torch Aloe.[1] Aloe arborescens is a species of flowering succulent perennial plants belonging to the genus Aloe, (yes the same one as Aloe vera!) and is a South African native.

Have you ever been bitten by a brown recluse spider in California? It's a myth.

Beverly Diane Wallace, UC Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development advisor emeritus and former long-time director of UCCE in San Diego County, died on March 13. She was 84. Wallace, who was born near Malibu, served UCCE for 38 years.

"I just got bit by a brown recluse spider in California." No, you didn't--unless you recently returned from a state where they are established or handled one shipped from that area. There are no established populations of Loxoceles reclusa in California.

George D. Rendell, UC Cooperative Extension 4-H youth advisor emeritus and long-time director of UCCE in Los Angeles County, died on Feb. 19 in Long Beach. He was 90.

A key component for youth on their thriving pathway is cultivating a growth mindset. Youth with a strong growth mindset view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. When young people possess a growth mindset, they are more resilient, and better able to adapt to challenging situations.
