Recently, there have been several rice straw bale fires and there could be more. CALFIRE suspects the cause is the higher moisture in the straw at the time of baling due to the lack of north winds during harvest and baling.

Last week sped by in the blink of an eye. Monday Greg Ira and I attended the 7th Annual Summit for California Climate Action Network (CalCan). ANR was well represented with Betsy Karle, Dan Macon, Toby O'Geen, Devii Rao, Leslie Roche, Lillian Thaoxaochay and Daniele Zaccaria.
In 2022, I estimate rice acreage in the Delta, south of the Yolo Bypass, was at least 8,000 acres. Most Delta rice is grown in San Joaquin County, but there is some acreage in Sacramento County.
It's Friday Fly Day and time to post a syrphid fly with a butterfly. The occasion: a syrphid fly and the Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) or passion butterfly are sharing a Mexican sunflower, Tithonia rotundifola, and neither seems bothered that the other is there.

Similar to previous years, UC ANR units including research and extension centers, UCCE county offices, the Second Street Building in Davis and Franklin Building in Oakland will be closed from Dec. 23, 2022, through Jan. 2, 2023, except for essential services. UC ANR offices will reopen on Jan.
It's fall and time to get your worm compost bins in order. Thicker bedding protects the worms during cold weather as they move to the center of the bin to keep warm. It is sometimes hard to work a compost bin and rebuild it during winter. It's cold, or it's raining.
