Fall is the best time to plant garlic for a summer harvest. Both the softneck and hardneck types of garlic can be planted now. The softneck varieties are found in most grocery stores. They have a mild flavor and store very well.

Are you a tuber grouper? Or maybe a tuber cougar? Or maybe a tuber goober? Whatever the case. It's fall and it's time to start planting. Tubers and rhizomes both grow from swollen portions of underground plant stems. Tubers can grow in any direction.

It's that time of year again: termite swarm season! Western subterranean termites, Reticulitermes hesperus (species complex), produce reproductive swarms during calm sunny periods immediately following the first autumn rains.

In late February, in an almond orchard in the Sacramento Valley, the fall-planted cover crop mix of grasses, brassicas and legumes had barely produced a green fuzz above the soil surface, and it was unclear when it would bloom.

Parasitologist Adler Dillman, an associate professor of parasitology at UC Riverside, will present a UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology seminar on "Nematode Venom Contains Potent Modulators of Insect Immunity" on Wednesday, Oct. 27 in 122 Briggs Hall, off Kleiber Hall Drive.

At the Edible Demonstration Garden this month, we have been following best practices for seeding our winter garden plants in the greenhouse. These practices were outlined in last months article. This month, we will begin moving some of these seedlings into the garden.
