When I started planting my winter vegetables this fall, I was looking forward to some radishes carrots, snow peas, spinach - the cool weather vegetables. As the seeds started sprouting and slowly growing through the cooler weather and shorter days, I started noticing an unexpected crop.

While most Californians are wholeheartedly embracing the wet start to winter, one group is welcoming the rain more warily (and wearily) lettuce growers in the Salinas Valley.

Freezing temperatures damage plants by causing ice crystals to form in their cells. Frost-damaged vegetation withers and turns a dark brown or black. Ice crystals can also form in citrus fruit, causing juice vesicles inside the fruit to rupture and the fruit to dry out.

"Around 250 million years ago, at the start of the Triassic period, a species of insect evolved to have a narrow waist, called a petiole. This adaptation allowed greater flexibility and maneuverability of the ovipositor, the tubular structure on the female's rear used to deposit eggs.

Although you never know about the weather, we do know that if heavy rain occurs after color break in mandarins there can be significant rind breakdown. This problem can destroy much of the crop and the problem is largely preventable.

The bare root fruit tree planting season is already here! Between December and February, deciduous bare root fruit trees are available for sale at nurseries and garden centers. Deciduous fruit trees lose their leaves each winter.
