By Penny Pawl, U. C. Master Gardener of Napa County One of spring's miracles is about to occur. The California Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies will start emerging from their pupas and gather around California pipevine plants to create a new generation sometime in March.

The UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology has announced its schedule for the spring quarter seminars, from April 1 through June 3. Due to the UC Davis directives on coronavirus outbreak precautions, these seminars will be virtual seminars, online only, until further notice.

UC California Naturalist and our UC Agriculture & Natural Resources statewide program partner Project Learning Tree (PLT) have joined forces to offer a series of workshops in 2020.

If you've ever visited the Hagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven on Bee Biology Road, UC Davis, you've seen it--the six-foot long ceramic-mosaic sculpture of a worker bee. Titled "Miss Bee Haven," it anchors the half-acre bee garden, which was installed in the fall of 2009 and named for its primary donor.

The Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus, and Easter cactus are tropical ephiphytes with spectacular blooms. (An epiphyte is a plant that grows on other plants but isn't a parasite.) These holiday cactus generally look similar and require similar care, but bloom at different times.
