Don Fenocchio Learning Garden in Clarksburg
Tucked into the heart of Clarksburg, California, the Don Fenocchio Learning Garden is more than just a green space—it's a hands-on classroom where young minds bloom alongside vegetables, native plants, and butterflies.
Created with a vision to educate children from transitional kindergarten through sixth grade, the garden is a collaborative effort between the UC Master Gardeners-Yolo and the Delta Elementary Charter School (DECS). Together, they’ve turned this small parcel of land into a vibrant outdoor learning lab. Here, students explore the essentials of gardening—soil composition, irrigation techniques, planting strategies, insect life cycles, seasonal crop maintenance, and harvesting.
The garden features eleven raised beds, fruit trees, and dedicated areas like a pollinator garden and a native plant garden, encouraging both ecological diversity and visual beauty. Students can trace the journey of a seed to the dinner table, discover which plants attract bees and butterflies, and understand why native species matter in a sustainable landscape.

But it’s not just about plants—wildlife plays a role too. A dedicated monarch butterfly habitat and a well-placed owl box help children learn about the intricate connections between animals and the ecosystem of a garden. These features offer invaluable lessons in conservation, life cycles, and the importance of preserving habitats.
Beyond education, the Don Fenocchio Learning Garden enhances the charm of Clarksburg, reminding residents and visitors alike of the value of green spaces and environmental stewardship. It stands as a living tribute to the power of community, curiosity, and hands-on learning.
Visiting the Garden
The garden is open to the public during daylight hours, though it has no lighting for evening visits. Whether you're a local resident, a curious visitor, or a gardening enthusiast, you’re welcome to stop by and see what’s growing.
Come experience a place where learning takes root and the next generation of gardeners is already growing strong.

Putah Creek Council Nursery Demonstration Garden
UC Master Gardeners of Solano and Yolo counties have designed a 2,000 square foot garden at the non-profit Putah Creek Council’s Nursery and Headquarters site at 3373 Sackett Lane, Winters, west of Solano Lake Park. The garden is a collaborative project between Putah Creek Council, UC Master Gardeners, and the Solano County Water Agency to foster community relationships. This garden is made entirely of native plants found throughout the Putah Creek watershed. One purpose is to demonstrate how you can replace your lawn with local, native species. Many of these species are adapted to conserve water and provide food and habitat to local wildlife and pollinators.

Take a stroll through the garden and get some ideas for your own yard! See what plants look beautiful to you, and imagine how they could fit in your yard. Volunteers are invited to join them for public workdays and actively participate in the garden maintenance. Additionally, the garden serves as a learning space, allowing experimentation with new gardening and restoration techniques to discover what works best.
