Although statewide policies limiting access to certain foods on school campuses are in place, studies have not shown sustainable improvements in student behaviors associated with reduced risk of obesity. Research suggests that simply offering healthy options is not enough to motivate children; in fact imposing restrictions rather than providing options for healthy choices has long-term, negative implications. This project, Shaping Healthy Choices Program (SHCP), moves beyond previous studies by embracing the concepts of integration and student self-efficacy and will test the hypothesis that schools utilizing the SHCP will have improved and measurable student outcomes with regard to dietary and nutrition knowledge and behavior, healthy food preferences and consumption, and physical activity.
